Sale of non-food goods accelerating y-o-y

Month-on-month comparison:
Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment decreased by 0.9%. This development was particularly affected by lower sales in the automotive segment (-2.6%) and lower sale of food (-0.2%). Sale of non-food goods stagnated.
Year-on-year comparison :
Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment were 0.6% up. The growth resulted mainly from good figures of retail trade excl. the automotive segment, predominantly ‘sale of textiles, clothing and footwear‘ (+7.7%) and ‘sale of furniture, electrical household appliances, hardware and other household equipment‘ (+7.6%).
The higher number of working days (+2) increased also sales not seasonally adjusted (+3.1%) in all the main assortment types of stores, except for ‘sale of motor vehicles‘, ‚sale via mail order houses‘ and ‘sale of second-hand goods in stores‘.
Sales in the automotive segment rose by 0.7%, of which ‘sale of automotive fuel‘ by 2.0%, and ‘maintenance and repair of motor vehicles‘ by 1.4%; on the other hand, ‘sale of motor vehicles‘ was behind the March 2003 level (-0.4%).
Sales in retail trade (excl. the automotive segment) grew by 4.3%. They went up faster in stores selling non-food goods (+5.1%) than in stores classified to the food assortment group (+3.0%). Sales in the individual assortment types of stores developed as follows:
- sales in non-specialised stores were 2.8% up, of which sales in stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating +2.6% and sales in stores with non-food goods predominating +3.5%;
- specialised stores raised their sale of food, beverages and tobacco by 4.8% and sale of non-food goods by 5.7%;
- sales in stores with textiles, clothing and footwear continued, just like in January and February, to grow considerably (+9.1%), stores selling furniture, electrical household appliances, hardware and other household equipment were 6.1% up, and sale of books, newspapers and stationery and other retail sale in specialised stores rose by 4.6%;
- coming Easter affected sales via stalls and markets (+14.7%), whereas demand for second-hand goods (-13.9%) and sale via mail order houses (-12.1%) heavily fell;
- sale of food, beverages and tobacco increased only in enterprises with 20+ employees, sale of non-food goods rose in all size groups of stores.
International comparison:
According to Eurostat, seasonally adjusted sales in the EU-25 grew by 0.1% m-o-m; in y-o-y terms, not seasonally adjusted sales rose by 2.6%.
