Growth of sales in retail trade slows down

In June, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade except automotive segment grew by 0.4% month-on-month at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison they increased by 2.7%, not seasonally adjusted by 1.4%. The biggest contribution to the growth of sales came from the sale of furniture, lighting equipment and household articles, electrical appliances, radio and television goods, hardware, paints and glass in specialized stores. In the automotive segment, seasonally adjusted sales increased by 1.7%, m-o-m, at constant prices, by 2.9% year-on-year and not seasonally adjusted (NSA) by 2.6%. SA sales in hotels and restaurants dropped by 0.6%, m-o-m, and NSA sales were 2.7% down, year-on-year.

Year-on-year, adjusted for seasonal and working day effects, sales in retail trade increased by 2.7% at constant prices, with only working day adjustment by 3.2%. Not seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 1.4% of which the non-food goods sales by 2.8% while the sales from the sale of food, beverages and tobacco dropped by 0.8%. Bigger y-o-y growth of SA sales compared to NSA sales was affected, given the same number of working days, by smaller number of Fridays this year which have a positive impact on retail trade and, in contrast, by bigger number of less favourable Mondays.
Generally low growth of sales was most contributed to by the sale of furniture, lighting equipment, household articles, electrical appliances, radio and television goods, hardware, paints and glass in specialised stores (0.6 p.p.) and retail sale of books, newspapers and stationery, other retail sale in specialised stores (0.4 p.p.), the growth was slowed down by specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco (-0.4 p.p.). The most rapid growth was recorded for insignificant retail trade via the Internet or mail order houses. The y-o-y drop of retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores continued (Table 2).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 103.6%. The biggest price increase was recorded in stores with food, beverages and tobacco, of which in specialized stores by 9.5%, in non-specialized stores by 7.6%. In retail sale via stalls and markets and in other non-store retail sale prices grew by 5.1%, in stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles prices increased by 4.7% and in non-specialised stores with the non-food goods predominating by 2.7%. In contrast, in stores with textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods prices dropped by 1.5%, in retail sale via mail order houses and in retail sale of second-hand goods by 1.3% and prices of furniture, lighting equipment, household articles, electrical appliances, radio and television goods, hardware, paints and glass were 0.7% down and in retail sale of books, newspapers and stationery, other retail sale in specialised stores prices fell by 0.2%.
In June, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales at constant prices in the EU27 decreased by 1.0% month-on-month and by 1.1% year-on-year (working days adjusted). Among the member states for which data were available, the year-on-year sales increases were recorded in Romania (+23.3%), Slovenia (+5.7%), Poland (+5.2%), Bulgaria (+5.1), Sweden (+3.3%), Slovakia (+3.2%), Lithuania (+3.1%), the United Kingdom (+2.9%) and in Finland (+2.5%). Sales fell in Latvia (-8.3%), Spain (-7.7%), Estonia (-7.2%), Denmark (-5.9%), Austria (-3.2%), Luxembourg (-2.6%), in Portugal (-2,0%), Germany (-1.6%) and in Belgium (-0.8%).

In the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 50), SA sales at constant prices increased by 1.7% month-on-month and grew by 2.9% year-on-year. NSA sales increased by 2.6% year-on-year, of which sales from the sale of automotive fuel were by 6.0% up and sales from maintenance and repair of motor vehicles increased by 0.9%.
In retail trade incl. the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 52 + 50), SA sales at constant prices increased by 0.8% month-on-month and by 2.8% year-on-year. NSA sales grew by 1.8% year-on-year.
In hotels and restaurants (CZ-NACE 55) SA sales at constant prices dropped by 0.6% month-on-month. NSA sales fell by 2.7 % year-on-year. The decrease came from lower sales in hotels, camping sites and other provisions of short-stay accommodation as well as from restaurants, bars and canteens (-4.8% and -1.8%, respectively). In hotels, camping sites and other provisions of short-stay accommodation with 20-49 employees the sales increased by 1.8%, in other size groups sales prices fell by 1.4% up to 10.9%. In restaurants, bars and canteens a drop of sales was recorded in all size groups.
