Growth trend of retail trade slightly decelerates

In June, seasonally adjusted sales in ‘retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles’ increased by 0.6% month-on-month at constant prices. The year-on-year increase was 6.8% or 6.4% (not seasonally adjusted). The biggest share in the year-on-year increase of total sales was recorded for specialised stores with household goods and other non-food goods (about 50%). Seasonally adjusted sales in hotels and restaurants dropped by 0.3% month-on-month in June, not seasonally adjusted sales increased by 0.5% year-on-year.

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade (CZ-NACE 52) increased by 0.6% month-on-month at constant prices in June, of which non-food goods by 0.6%, food, beverages and tobacco by 0.5%. The increase by 0.5% of the trend component remained approximately on the level of the previous two months, compared to the first three months of this year it however decreased (Table 1).

Year-on-year, after seasonal and working day adjustments, sales in retail trade increased by 6.8% at constant prices, after working days adjustments only by 6.9%. Not seasonally adjusted sales with a lower number (-1) of working days in June 2007 increased by 6.4% compared to the same period of the previous year, of which non-food goods by 8.3% and food, beverages and tobacco by 3.8%. So far, sales have been growing faster this year than in the first six months of the last year, however the growth slowed down in Q2.


The biggest contribution to the growth in June had specialised stores with electronics, electrical appliances, construction materials, furniture and other household goods, and a slightly lower contribution had specialised stores with other non-food goods. The fastest increases occurred in retail sale via Internet or mail order houses, however with an insignificant impact on the total sales growth. The second fastest growth was recorded in the already mentioned stores with electronics, electrical appliances, construction materials, furniture and other household goods and in stores with textiles, clothing and footwear. (Table 3)

Broken down by size group of enterprises, the biggest growth of sales occurred in enterprises with 50 to 99 employees (+12.9%). Other size groups of enterprises reported an increase from 6.0% to 6.4%.

The price deflator (related to the corresponding period of the previous year) was 101.2%. Prices were up in stores with food, beverages and tobacco, in both specialised and non-specialised (+5.0% and +4.0%, respectively), in stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+2.5%), in non-specialised stores with non-food goods predominating (+1.0%) and in retail sale not in stores (+0.9%). On the contrary, prices dropped in stores with other non-food goods (-2.5%), in sale via mail order houses (-1.4%), in stores with second-hand goods (-1.2%), in stores with household goods (-0.8%) and stores with textiles, clothing and footwear (-0.4%).

In June 2007, according to data released by Eurostat, seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales in the EU27 increased by 0.5% month-on-month and by 2.2% year-on-year (working days adjusted). Among member states for which data were available, year-on-year sale increases were recorded in Latvia (+24.4%), Lithuania (+16.1%), Estonia (+13.0%), Poland (+9.2%), Sweden (+8.6%), Slovakia (+7.5%), Finland (+6.9%), Bulgaria (+6.5%), Luxembourg (+4.4%), Spain (+4.2%), the United Kingdom (+3.6%), Belgium (+2.7%), Portugal (+1.7%), Slovenia and Denmark (+0.8%) and Austria (+0.6%). Prices dropped in Germany (-2.5%).

In the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 50), not seasonally adjusted sales rose by 8.9% year-on-year at constant prices; sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles increased by 12.2% and sale of automotive fuel by 2.6%.

In retail trade incl. the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 52 + 50), seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.6% month-on-month and not seasonally adjusted sales grew by 7.2% year-on-year.

In hotels and restaurants (CZ-NACE 55) seasonally adjusted sales incl. working days adjustments decreased in June compared to May by 0.3%, of which in hotels by 0.7%, in restaurants only by 0.1%. Seasonally adjusted sales increased by 1.0% year-on-year at constant prices. The at least slight growth of not seasonally adjusted sales by 0.5% was contributed to by the development in restaurants, bars and canteens, where sales increased by 2.0%. In hotels and camping sites sales dropped by 3.2%. Compared to the development in the last 12 months, it concerned in the case of restaurants a deceleration of the growth and in the case of hotels a deepening of the sales drop.
