Sales in retail trade continued to grow dynamically

In June, seasonally adjusted sales in ‘retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles’ increased by 0.7% month-on-month at constant prices. Not seasonally adjusted sales grew by 8.3% year-on-year. The biggest contribution to the growth was owing to retail trade in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco as well as those with non-food goods predominating.

In June, seasonally adjusted retail sales (CZ-NACE 52) grew by 0.7% month-on-month at constant prices; sales of non-food goods by 0.7%, sales of food, beverages and tobacco grew by 0.6%. The increase of the trend component was approximately the same as in the previous month, by 0.4% (Table 1).

Seasonally adjusted (SA) sales increased by 7.1% year-on-year at constant prices; not seasonally adjusted sales grew even by 8.3%. There was the same number of working days in both June 2006 and 2005; however, in 2006 there was a higher number of Fridays (that are important for retail trade) and a lower number of Wednesdays (that belong to average days as for sales). Non-food sales increased by 9.5%, sales of food, beverages and tobacco were higher by 6.6%.
The following contributed most to the total growth: non-specialised stores, specialised stores with electrical household appliances, hardware, furniture and other household goods, and specialised stores with other non-food goods. The fastest increases were recorded for sale in stores with clothing, textiles and footwear and in non-specialised stores with non-food goods predominating (Table 3). The decrease was recorded in the sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores, and in retail sale not in stores (excluding retail sale via mail order houses).
In the classification according to size groups of enterprises, the biggest sale growth occurred in enterprises with 100 and more employees (+13.2%). Enterprises in other size groups reported growth from 4.0% to 5.4%.
The price deflator for retail sales (compared to the corresponding period of previous year) reached 99.5%. The biggest drop in prices was recorded for specialised stores with textiles, clothing and footwear (-6.3%); higher prices (than in the corresponding period of previous year) were in specialised stores with food, beverages and tobacco (+0.9%) and with other non-food goods (+0.5%), stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+0.3%) and in non-specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (+0.3%).
In June, according to data presented by Eurostat, seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales in the EU25 were up by 0.4% month-on-month and 2.7% year-on-year (working days adjusted). Among member states for which data were available, year-on-year increases in sales were observed in Latvia (+20.9%), Estonia (+17.8%), Slovakia (+11.2%), Sweden (+7.5%), Poland (+7.3%), Finland (+6.5%), Lithuania (+6.0%), the United Kingdom (+4.1%), Denmark (+4.0%), Austria (+3.9%), Slovenia (+2.1%), Germany (+1.9%), France (+1.5%), and in Spain (+0.7%). Falls were registered in Portugal (-4.8%), Luxembourg (-4.7%) and Belgium (-1.3%).

Growth of not seasonally adjusted sales in the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 50) by 3.4% year-on-year at constant prices was influenced mainly by higher sales from the sale of automotive fuel (+6.5%); however, also sales from the sale, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles increased (+1.8%).
In retail trade incl. the automotive segment (CZ-NACE 52+50) , seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices dropped by 0.5% month-on-month and not seasonally adjusted sales grew by 6.6% year-on-year.
