Month-on-month comparison:

In June, compared with May, seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment increased by 1.8%. Increases were recorded especially for sales in the automotive segment (+3.9%) and for sales of food (+1.9%). Sales of non-food goods grew at a lower rate (+0.3%).

Year-on-year comparison :

Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment grew by 1.9%. Significant rises occurred in sales of textiles, clothing, footwear and leather products (+18.0%) as well as in sales in food-specialized stores (+8.6%) and sales of household equipment and appliances (i.e. electronics, electrical appliances, hardware, furniture and other household goods) (+6.6%). Sales in non-specialized stores selling predominantly non-food goods and sales of repairs of motor vehicles dropped (by 4.4% and 4.3%, respectively).

Sales not seasonally adjusted rose by 3.7% (in June 2004 there was one more working day than in June 2003). The growth was approximately the same in both retail trade industries.

Sales in the automotive segment increased by 3.8 %. This was the highest year-on-year growth of sales since the beginning of the year, primarily due to the development of sales of motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories (an increase of 6.0%). According to the information by the Automotive Industry Association, there were fewer new passenger cars sold, but the sale of utility cars and lorries increased significantly. Sale of automotive fuel was up by 3.8% while that concerning maintenance and repair of motor vehicles was down by 1.8%

Sales in retail trade (excl. the automotive segment) grew by 3.7%, of which stores selling non-food goods and food-selling stores accounted for increases of 4.0% and 3.4%, respectively. Sales in the individual assortment types of stores developed as follows:

- sales in non-specialised stores increased by 0.6%, of which in stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating by 1.9%; sales in stores selling mostly non-food goods dropped by 4.0%;

- specialised stores raised their sales a great deal faster: of food, beverages and tobacco by 12.3% and of non-food goods by 5.9%;

- since April 2003, sales have been dynamically rising in stores selling textile, clothing, footwear and leather products – in June this year they increased there by as high as 20.8% (among other things due to the earlier start of seasonal price reductions in some stores). Stores selling household equipment and appliances (electronics, electrical appliances, hardware, furniture and other household goods) raised their sale by 9.9%. Sale of books, newspapers and stationery and other retail sale in specialised stores grew by 3.8%, while that of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles stagnated;

- sale via stalls and markets and other non-store retail sale grew by 3.9%, while sale of second-hand goods and sale via mail order houses dropped (by 7.9% and 3.8%, respectively).


International comparison:

According to estimates of Eurostat, seasonally adjusted retail sales excl. the automotive segment in EU 25 were up by 1.2% m-o-m; not seasonally adjusted sales increased by 2.7% y-o-y.
