Retail trade on decline for the ninth month in a row

In June, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased month-on-month by 1.1% at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison they dropped by 5.8%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 4.9%, in the year-on-year comparison, for the ninth month in a row. The year-on-year sales drop owed mainly to the sale of motor vehicles and the non-food goods.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased in June, m-o-m, by 1.1%, at constant prices, and by 5.8%, in the year on year comparison. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped by 4.9%, compared to 2008 (June 2009 had one working day more than June 2008), and the drop continues for the ninth consecutive month. The biggest contribution to the y-o-y drop came from the sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) and the non-food goods (see table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) fell by 1.4% at constant prices in the month-on-month comparison and by 14.0%, y-o-y. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 11.6%, of which sales from the sale of motor vehicles by 11.9% and from repair by 9.4%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales dropped, m-o-m, by 0.9% at constant prices and by 2.2%, in the year-on-year comparison. Seasonally non-adjusted sales fell by 1.7%, y-o-y, of which from the sale of fuel by 4.5% and from the sale of the non-food goods by 2.8% while the sales from the sale of food increased by 1.2%.
Rainy weather partly influenced the drop of sales in retail trade via stalls and markets, which was the biggest, in relative terms, among all surveyed types of stores (-9.2%). In respect of low absolute value of these sales the drop had only minimum impact on total results. The sale of food, beverages and tobacco and household goods in specialized stored fell markedly (by 8.4% and 8.3%, respectively), contributing thus by 1.6% p.p. to the total drop. The already mentioned total growth of sales from the sale of food came from non-specialized stores especially chain stores (stores employing 100+ employees in this product group recorded a 3.3% sales increase). Good results were reported for stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (growth by 4.3%) and for retail trade of information and communication equipment (growth by 2.9%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period in 2008 was 94.9%. The biggest price increase was recorded in specialized stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+2.7%), for food in specialized stores (+1.9%) and, by contrast, prices of fuel dropped by 20.1%, prices of information and communication equipment by 10.0% and prices of second-hand goods by 5.9%.
In June, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 increased month-on-month by 0.1% at constant prices and, working day adjusted sales dropped by 1.7%, year-on-year. The sales grew only in Austria (+2.7%), the United Kingdom (+1.8%), Sweden (+1.2%) and in Poland (+0.6%). The biggest sales drops were recorded in Latvia (-29.1%), Lithuania (-19.9%) and in Romania (-17.8%)
