Retail trade showed signs of revival, m-o-m, while in the y-o-y comparison it continued to fall

In July, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased month-on-month by 1.1% at constant prices and in the year-on-year comparison they dropped by 3.1%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 4.9%, in the year-on-year comparison. The year-on-year sales drop owed mainly to the sale of motor vehicles and the non-food goods.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment increased in July by 1.1%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year on year comparison they fell by 3.1%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped by 4.9%, compared to 2008 (July 2009 had one working day less than July 2008). The biggest contribution to the y-o-y drop came again from the sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) and the non-food goods (see table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) fell by 0.3% at constant prices in the month-on-month comparison and by 12.5%, y-o-y. Seasonally non-adjusted sales dropped, y-o-y, by 15.4%, of which sales from the sale of motor vehicles by 16.8% and from repair by 8.1%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales increased, m-o-m, by 1.6% at constant prices and by 1.0%, in the year-on-year comparison. Seasonally non-adjusted sales fell by 0.1%, y-o-y, of which from the sale of the non-food goods by 4.0% while the sales from the sale of fuel increased by 5.0% and from the sale of food, beverages and tobacco by 2.9%.
Among items having impact on total results a marked drop was recorded in the sale of household goods and food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores (by 10.4% and 8.3%, respectively). In contrast, sales increase was reported for stores with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+4.6%), clothing and footwear (+4.3%), for non specialized stores with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (+3.9%) and in retail trade of information and communication equipment (+1.3%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period in 2008 was 94.5%. The biggest price decrease was recorded in the sale of fuel (-19.2%), information and communication equipment (-9.6%), second-hand goods (-6.6%), clothing and footwear (-4.3%) and the goods in non-specialized stores (-4.1%). Growing were mainly prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+1.4%) and prices of food, beverages and tobacco in specialized stores (+0.7%).
In July, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 increased month-on-month by 0.2% at constant prices and, working day adjusted sales dropped by 0.9%, year-on-year. The fastest growth of sales was reported for Belgium (+4.8%), Sweden (+4.6%) and Poland (+4.4%). The biggest sales drops were recorded in Latvia (-29.5%), Estonia (-20.0%) and in Lithuania (-19.1%).
