January fall in sales did not repeat in February

Month-on-month comparison:

In February, seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment increased by 1.2% on January. The growth was mainly affected by higher sales in the automotive segment (+2.9%) and higher sales of non-food goods (+1.0%). Sales of food, beverages or tobacco dropped by 0.4%.

Year-on-year comparison:

Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment were 2.2% up, of which the automotive segment sales increased by 0.4% and the remaining retail sales rose by 3.1%.

Sales not seasonally adjusted were 2.3% up. Higher sales were recorded for all main assortment groups of stores except for sale and repair of motor vehicles and specialized stores with other non-food goods.

The automotive segment recorded a 0.5% drop in sales, of which sale of automotive fuel rose by 6.1%; sales and repairs of motor vehicles failed to reach their last year’s comparable level (by 3.5% and 6.3%, respectively).

With the automotive segment excluded, retail sales increased by 3.7%, namely by 3.9% in stores classified to the food assortment group and by 3.2% in stores selling non-food goods. Sales in the individual assortment types of stores developed as follows:

- sales in non-specialized stores were 3.3% up, of which sales in stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating accounted for a rise of 4.1%. Sales in stores with no-food goods predominating were stagnating at the February 2003 level;

- specialized stores raised their sales of non-food goods by 3.8% and of food, beverages or tobacco by 2.8%;

- in non-food specialized stores, consumers’ interest fuelled by action discounts focused on purchasing clothing and footwear (an increase of 13.1%) and furniture, electrical household appliances, hardware and other household equipment (+10.0%). Pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles sold worse (an increase of 2.6% only). Sales of books, newspapers and stationery and other retail sale in specialised stores were 0.2% below the level of February 2003;

- retail sale via stalls and markets and other non-store retail sale increased by 14.3% and retail sale via mail order houses by 3.5%, while interest in second hand goods went on falling (-4,0%);

- in non-specialized stores only enterprises with 50+ employees raised their sales: those with 100+ employees by 7.1% and those with 50 to 99 employees by 0.6% only. In specialized stores selling non-food goods, entrepreneurs without employees and enterprises with 20 to 49 employees saw their sales drop. However, sales of clothing and footwear were rising in all size groups of stores.
