Also sale of food (+0.8%) and sale of non-food goods (+0.4%) grew.

Year-on-year comparison :

Seasonally adjusted constant price retail sales incl. the automotive segment were 2.9% up, which was by 1.6 percentage points more than the average for the preceding three months, but by 0.9 percentage points less than the average for the preceding 12 months.

Not seasonally adjusted sales rose by 2.6%, most in enterprises with 100 or more employees (+7.6%), whereas entrepreneurs without employees sold by 9.3% less than in April 2003.

Sales in the automotive segment increased by 0.9%. Sale of motor vehicles was 4.3% up, in spite of a lower number of the new cars sold. Sales in retail trade (excl. the automotive segment) grew by 3.4%, non-food goods sold better (+4.3%) than food (+2.4%). Sales in the individual assortment types of stores developed as follows:

- sales in non-specialised stores varied. While stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating reported higher sales (+2.4%), sales in stores with non-food goods predominating were lower (-4.6%), mainly due to decreasing sales by entrepreneurs without employees and enterprises with 100 or more employees;

- specialised stores raised their sale of non-food goods in all size groups of stores (+6.5% in total) and sale of food, beverages and tobacco (+2.6%);

- sales in stores with textiles, clothing and footwear (+14.8%) and in stores selling furniture, electrical household appliances, hardware and other household equipment (+12.3%) continued to grow considerably. Higher sales were also achieved in the remaining specialised stores – with pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (+5.0%) and with books, newspapers and stationery and other retail sale in specialised stores (+2.2%)%;

- sales via stalls and markets grew by 1.5% and sale of second-hand goods rose by 0.4%, whereas sale via mail order houses fell by 7.7%.
