Publication Date: 09. 08. 2022
Product Code: 270149-22
The meat production in Q2 2022 continued to slowly decrease and reached 113 089 tonnes; it was by 2.7% lower, y-o-y. The largest drop was recorded for beef (−6.6%) while the poultrymeat production declined the least (−1.9%). Agricultural producer prices of animals for slaughter went steeply up.
“Agricultural producer prices grew rapidly in Q2 2022, and not only in Czechia. It motivated cattle and poultry farmers to export their animals for slaughter, and, therefore, the meat production in slaughterhouses decreased more than the gross indigenous production,” Renata Vodičková, Head of Agricultural and Forestry Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office, explains.
Meat production a milk collection
In Q2 2022, the production of beef fell by 6.6%, y-o-y, to 16 810 tonnes. In total 54.3 thous. head of cattle (−6.5%) were slaughtered, of which 22.4 thous. head were bulls (−11.7%), 23.7 thous. head were cows (−0.2%), and 6.2 thous. head were heifers (−11.6%). This decrease of meat production at slaughterhouses was influenced by lowered imports and increased exports of cattle, especially bulls, intended for slaughter.
The pigmeat production reached 53 505 tonnes (−2.2%). The number of slaughtered pigs declined, y-o-y, to 576.1 thous. head (−3.4%). The number of fattened pigs slaughtered went down by 3.6%. The increase in slaughtering of sows slowed down; nevertheless, the number of slaughtered sows rose by 5.7% compared to Q2 2021.
The poultrymeat production amounted to 42 729 tonnes (−1.9%), which value corresponds to 65 751 tonnes of poultry supplied to slaughterhouses. This result reflects increased exports of live poultry intended to slaughter abroad.
In total 790 782 thousand litres of milk (+1.0%) were collected from domestic producers in Q2 2022, of which 683 397 thousand litres (+0.7%) were purchased by dairies.
Agricultural producer prices
Agricultural producer prices of cattle for slaughter went up by 29.5%, y-o-y, of which by 24.5% for bulls for slaughter, by 37.9% for cows for slaughter, and by 32.9% for heifers for slaughter. The average price of bulls for slaughter was 57.49 CZK per kg in live weight or 104.63 CZK per kg in carcass weight.
The prices of pigs for slaughter went up by 20.2%. Agricultural producers sold pigs for on average 33.52 CZK per kg in live weight or 43.58 CZK per kg in carcass weight.
The prices of chicken for slaughter increased as well, y-o-y (+13.1%). Chicken for slaughter of the first quality class were sold on average for 26.03 CZK per kg in live weight.
Agricultural producer prices of milk grew, y-o-y, by 21.6%. The average price of Q-quality milk reached 10.75 CZK per litre.
“Prices of animals for slaughter rose to an exceptional level in Q2 2022; cattle and poultry for slaughter haven’t been sold at such high prices before. Prices of pigs for slaughter undergo more frequent fluctuations, and although they rose as well, they haven’t yet reached the level of the last price peak at the turn of 2019 and 2020”, Markéta Fiedlerová from the Agricultural and Forestry Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office, added.
