Meat production and milk collection went down y-o-y

In the 3 rd quarter 2009 meat production and milk collection decreased (by 6.9% and 2.8%, respectively). 138 488 tonnes of meat in carcass weight were produced in total. This amount included 49.7% of pig meat, 13.4% of beef incl. veal and 36.9% of poultry meat.

Slaughter and meat production
In the 3 rd quarter 2009 numbers of cattle slaughtered incl. calves decreased by 4.2% y-o-y. Numbers of bulls slaughtered went down by 16.5% whereas numbers of cows and heifers slaughtered increased (by 7.2% and 7.0%, respectively). Average carcass weight of cattle went down by 2.2% to 285.0 kg. As a result, beef production inc. veal decreased by 6.3%% y-o-y.
Numbers of pigs slaughtered went down by 11.4% y-o-y, while their average carcass weight increased by 0.7% to 87.2 kg. Production of pig meat declined by 10.7% y-o-y.
Production of poultry meat dropped by 1.4% y-o-y.

Outputs of cattle, pigs and poultry rearing
According to the livestock outputs, cattle numbers increased by 0.7% to 1 424 thousand heads as at 30 June 2009 y-o-y. Cow numbers went up by 2.4% to 578 thousand heads, of which dairy cows dropped by 0.7% to 401 thousand heads. On the contrary number of suckler cows rose by 10.2% to 177 thousand heads y-o-y.
Pig numbers went down by 9.4% to 2 130 thousand heads, of which sow and gilt numbers dropped (by 16.0% to 139 thousand heads and 14.9% to 56 thousand heads, respectively) as at 1 August 2009.
Poultry numbers went up by 2.1% to 26 million heads as at 30 June 2009.
Agricultural producers’ prices of cattle, pigs and chicken for slaughter
Agricultural producers’ prices of cattle for slaughter increased for bulls and calves y-o-y (by 1.3% and 6,4%, respectively). On the other hand prices of heifers and cows for slaughter declined y-o-y (by 3.8% and 3.1%, respectively). In the 3 rd quarter 2009 average price of bulls for slaughter in S, E, U-quality reached CZK 39.56 per kilogram in live weight and CZK 74.52 per kilogram in carcass weight.
Agricultural producers’ prices of pigs for slaughter went down by 3.4% y-o-y. Average price of pigs for slaughter in S, E, U-quality totalled CZK 31.53 per kilogram in live weight and CZK 40.84 per kilogram in carcass weight.
Prices of agricultural producers of chicken for slaughter in the 1st-quality category decreased by 9.6% y-o-y and amounted to CZK 20.68 per kilogram in live weight.

Foreign trade in meat and livestock
According to preliminary outputs, foreign trade 1) in meat ended in a passive trade balance for beef, pig meat and poultry meat in the period from the 1st June 2009 to the 31st August 2009 (by 3 487 tonnes, by 35 870 tonnes and 11 345 tonnes, respectively).
Beef imports went up by 13.4% (by 561 tonnes) y-o-y, while exports decreased by 7.8% (by 106 tonnes). Beef was imported predominantly from Poland (44%) and to a lesser extent from Germany (20%, Austria (12%) and Ireland (10%). Exports went to Slovakia (37%), Austria (20%), the Netherlands (17%) and Poland (16%).
Imports of pig meat went up by 19.3% (by 7 216 tonnes) and exports increased by 3.3% (by 281 tonnes) y-o-y. Almost a half of pig meat imported came from Germany (45%), a lesser amount was imported from Austria (10%), Spain (9%) and Poland (9%). Majority of export went to Slovakia (90%).
Imports of poultry meat went up by 22.1% (by 3 172 tonnes) and exports increased by 7.3% (by 420 tonnes) y-o-y. Poultry meat was imported largely from Poland (43%) and to a lesser extent from Brazil (19%), Slovakia (12%) and France (7%). Meat was exported predominantly to Slovakia (36%), to a lesser amount to Germany (18%) and Hungary (17%).
Foreign trade 1) in live animals ended in an active trade balance for cattle (12 032 tonnes) and poultry (7 830 tonnes). On the other hand foreign trade in live pigs ended in a passive trade balance (5 802 tonnes).
Imports of live cattle went down by 13.0% (by 67 tonnes) whereas exports went up by 21.9% (by 2 243 tonnes) y-o-y. Cattle were imported largely from Slovakia (95%), exports went predominantly to Austria (55%) and to a lesser extent to Germany (12%) and Croatia (7%).
Imports of live pigs increased by 71.0% (by 3 303 tonnes) whereas exports decreased by 28.1% (by 839 tonnes) y-o-y. Pigs were imported largely from Germany (45%), the Netherlands (22%) and Denmark (22%). Pig exports were destined predominantly for Slovakia (50%), Austria (25%) and Hungary (24%).
Imports in live poultry increased by 43.3% (by 581 tonnes) and exports went up by 7.1% (by 647 tonnes) y-o-y. Live poultry were imported predominantly from Slovakia (72%) and Germany (24%), exports went to Germany (50%), Poland (28%) and Slovakia (18%).
Milk collection and agricultural producers’ prices of milk
Milk collected to dairies stood at 579.3 million litres in the 3rd quarter 2009. Milk collection went down by 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Agricultural producers’ price of milk in the Q-quality dropped by 27.7% y-o-y. The average price of milk amounted to CZK 5.95 per litre.

Foreign trade in milk and milk products
Foreign trade 1) in milk and milk products ended in active trade balance (150.3 thousand tonnes) in the period from the 1st June 2009 to the 31st August 2009 due to a high amount of raw milk exports (incl. cream). Imports of milk and milk products went down by 2.6% (by 1.8 thousand tonnes), exports increased by 1.2% (by 2.6 thousand tonnes) y-o-y. Milk and milk products were imported predominantly from Poland (32%), Slovakia (29%), Germany (29%) and exported largely to Germany (57%) and to a lesser extent to Slovakia (13%), Italy (10%) and Hungary (8%).

The threshold values have been raised as of 1 January 2009 to CZK 8 mil. for both dispatched and arrived goods. However, the providers of statistical information, who exceeded the exemption threshold 2 or 4 millions CZK in 2008 are obliged to continue declaring Intrastat data in 2009 as well.
