In 2024, the number of guests exceeded values from the pre-COVID year 2019 for the first time

The number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments increased by 7.0%, year-on-year, to the total of 11.7 million nights in the Q4 2024. Residents spent in Czechia 5.4 million nights and non-residents by almost 1 million nights more. Compared to the Q4 of 2023, the number of overnight stays of domestic guests increased by 2.8% and the foreign clientele reported an increase by 10.9%.
“In the Q4 2024, almost 5 million guests accommodated in collective accommodation establishments, which was an increase in the number of guests by 7.1%, year-on-year. The year-on-year development was influenced by an increased number of arrivals of both residents and non-residents,” Roman Mikula, Head of the Tourism and Environmental Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), stated.
In a hotel-type accommodation, over 4 million guests stayed overnight in the Q4 2024; they spent 9 million nights in Czechia. The number of accommodated guests increased there by 7.3% and the number of overnights stays increased by 8.0%. The number of non-residents increased in all hotel categories; the highest increase was reported by five-star and four-star hotels. 1.7 million residents and 2.3 million non-residents arrived to accommodation establishments of a hotel type; they spent there 3.4 million and 5.7 million nights, respectively. Boarding houses reported an increase in the number of both guests as well as overnight stays. The number of visitors increased there by 3.5%, y-o-y, and the number of nights increased by 2.7%. A growth of both main indicators was recorded in domestic as well as foreign clientele.
In terms of comparison of Regions, in the Q4 2024, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, the total number of accommodated guests only decreased in the Olomoucký Region and in the Moravskoslezský Region; other Regions reported growth. The highest increase in the number of guests was recorded in the Královéhradecký Region, the Jihočeský Region, and the Liberecký Region. The number of overnight stays increased in most of the Regions of Czechia, the most in Prague, in the Královéhradecký Region, and in the Liberecký Region. A decrease in the number of nights was only registered in the Olomoucký Region that was affected by floods. Non-residents reported in all Regions of Czechia an increase in both the number of guests as well as the number of nights.
Compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, by 10.7% more foreign guests (non-residents; by citizenship) accommodated in collective accommodation establishments. The highest number of tourists came to Czechia from Germany (almost 600 thousand); over 150 thousand non-residents also arrived from Slovakia, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Norther Ireland, and from Poland. All the ten most numerous groups of foreign guests reported growth both in arrivals as well as in the number of overnight stays. The highest year-on-year increment in the number of guests as well as nights was recorded in non-residents from Israel.
Development in 2024
Last year, 22.8 million guests arrived to collective accommodation establishments in the Czech Republic; they spent there 57.3 million nights. Most of the guests (54%) were domestic ones; the number of their arrivals decreased by 0.7%, year-on-year, and the number of their overnight stays dropped by 2.2%, y-o-y. This development was mainly influenced by a decrease in the Q3 of 2024. On the other hand, by 9.7% more non-residents came to Czechia; they spent there by 9.2% more nights compared to the year 2023. Last year, it was for the first time when tourism was above the level of the pre-COVID year of 2019, namely as for the number of accommodated guests as well as the number of overnight stays. Compared to the year 2019, by 820 thousand more tourists accommodated in Czech collective accommodation establishments and also the number of overnight stays was by 264 thousand nights higher.
