More guests arrived but for shorter time

Q3 2013, the number of guests’ overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments decreased by 1.9% year-on-year. The number of nights spent by domestic visitors went down by 3.8%, however overnight stays by non-residents went up by 0.4%. The total number of arrivals increased by 1.7%; of which domestic guests by 1.9% and foreigners by 1.5% more.
The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 14.3 million in Q3 2013; this was by 1.9% less than in the same period of the previous year. Whereas the number of domestic guests decreased by 3.8%, guests from abroad spent more overnights by 0.4% compared to Q3 2012. The number of overnight stays in hotels went down by 1.0% y-o-y, in pensions by 1.9%, in other accommodation establishments by 3.4%. On contrary camp sites reported an increased interest in accommodation. The number of nights in camps rose by 8.2%; of which domestic guests by 7.0% and foreigners by 16.5%. From regional point of view, an increase was shown by accommodation establishments in only two regions, in Jihomoravsky by 9.4% and Olomoucky by 1.4%. In other regions, there was a y-o-y decrease in the number of nights; the highest in Kralovehradecky region by 7.5%.
A total of 4.8 million guests arrived in collective accommodation establishments; this was 1.7% more than in Q3 2012. The number of residents increased by 1.9% and non-residents by 1.5%. In the main season there were more guests than a year ago, but they cut the length of their stays. While the last year the length of stay reached in average 4.1 days, this year it was 4.0 days. Hotels reported an increased interest of guests by 1.0%, camp sites by 8.5% and in holiday dwellings and hostels for tourists arrived more guests by 3.8% y-o-y. Lower demand was recorded in pensions by 1.2% and category of other establishments by 1.8%. From the regional point of view, an increase was shown in 10 out of 14 regions of the Czech Republic only. The highest increase was in Olomoucky region (by 11.8%) and Jihomoravsky and Zlinsky region (both by 7.8%).
The highest number of foreign guests (by nationality) came traditionally from Germany (412 thousand); this was by 5.2% less than a year ago. The second largest group was guests from Russia (195 thousand) with the y-o-y increase in arrivals by 5.1%. Third place occupied visitors from the United States of America (148 thousand; by 12.5% more). More than 100 thousand visitors arrived also from Poland, Slovakia and the Great Britain. Worth noticing is an increase by 30.7% of arrivals from Norway, especially at the international meeting of young people in Prague.
Spa accommodation establishments visited 210 thousand guests in Q3 2013; this was 4.1% up y-o-y, where the number of non-residents went up by 5.7% and residents by 2.7%. Majority of foreign guest (92%) went to Karlovarsky region, which is constantly showing the share more than a half of the number of arrivals as well as overnight stays in spa establishments. In Karlovarsky region, the number of arrivals of non-residents increased by 4.2% but the number of residents on contrary dropped by 12.7%. The decrease of domestic clients in Karlovarsky region can be seen already four quarters in a row.
Rooms of hotels and pensions were used from 50.2%; this was by 0.3 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Five-star hotels with the highest utilisation from all categories of hotels (71.7%) increased their usage by 0.9 p.p. Utilisation of four-star hotels went down by 1.2 p.p. to the level of 63.5%. A decrease reported also three-star hotels by 0.6 p.p. to the level of 48.1%.
