More Foreign guests arrived, repeated decrease of domestic guests

Q3 2010, the number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments increased by 0.7% year-on-year, of which non-residents by 5.1%, on the contrary residents went down by 2.5%. In total, more guests arrived by 2.7%, of which foreigners increased by 7.0%, on the contrary residents went down by 0.9%.

The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 14.1 million in Q3 2010; this was by 0.7% more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays of non-residents went up by 5.1%, on the contrary the number of residents was by 2.5% down. The sharpest drop reported holiday dwellings (by 15.7%) and kemps, despite exceptionally hot July. It was followed by colder weather in August influenced by a wave of flooding, which hit several localities, where particularly domestic guests stay. A good beginning of the season for owners of accommodation establishments ended just in the middle (the number of overnight stays in kemps increased by 10.8% in July, on the contrary there was a sharp decrease by 27.1% in August and even by 32.1% in September; in the whole 3Q there was the decrease by 9.1%). In contrast a remarkable year-on-year increase went on in upper class hotels (five-star hotels by 17.4% and four-star hotels by 10.9%) with dominance of foreign clients. From regional point of view, there was the highest increase in overnight stays in Prague (by 8.1%), in contrast the highest decrease was shown in regions hit by flooding – Ustecky (by 11.0%) and Liberecky (by 9.9%).

A total of 4.4 million guests were recorded; this was 2.7% up on Q3 2009. Non-residents guests arrived by 7.0% more; the number of residents was lower by 0.9%. As far as the category of the accommodation establishments or regions is concerned, the number of arrivals followed the development of the number of overnight stays. The highest growth in arrivals was in five-star and four-star hotels (by 17.2% and 15.6% respectively) and in Prague (by 9.6%), in contrast the highest drop was again shown in Ustecky region (by 13.3%). The highest number of foreign guests, in spite of year-on-year decrease by 4.9%, arrived from Germany. Remarkably high increase was by tourists from Russia (by 36.3%), USA (by 15.6%) and France (by 12.1%). Domestic clients preferred according to the results more quality type of establishments compared to previous periods – the highest growth was by four-star hotels (by 20.5%).

At spa accommodation establishments the number of overnight stays totalled 2.1 million; this was 2.7% up year-on-year. The number of overnight stays of non-residents went up by 3.9% and residents by 2.0%. In Karlovarsky Region with the share more than half in occupancy of spa establishments the number of overnight stays of domestic guests increased by 2.0% and foreigners by 4.4%, the number of arrivals of residents went up by 14.9% and non-residents by 12.2% (this shows evidence of shortening of stays of domestic guest in particular).

Rooms of hotels and similar establishments were used from 49.3% in Q3 2010; this was by 3.0 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Five-star hotels with the highest utilisation of 64.1% increased their usage by 11.8 p.p.; four-star hotels with utilisation of 61.3% by 3.7 p.p. A growth by 0.2 p.p. was shown boarding houses and their utilisation of rooms was as usual the lowest (31.2%).

1 ) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
