Number of overnight stays dropped by 3.6%, number of guests by 0.1%

In Q2 2008, the number of overnight stays at collective accommodation establishments decreased by 3.6% year-on-year, as for foreign visitors it was by 3.5% and domestic visitors by 3.8%. The number of guests decreased by 0.1%.

The number of overnight stays, which is more significant indicator for economy of accommodation establishment than the number of guests’ arrivals, totalled 9.7 million in Q2. This was by 3.6% less than in the same period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays of nonresidents reached 5.2 million and went down by 3.5%. Residents spent 4.5 million overnights; this was by 3.8% down. As for the particular category of establishments the growth was reported by four-star hotels (+15.6%) and three-star hotels (+6.2%) only. From geographical point of view the number of overnight stays went up in Jihomoravsky (+3.7%) and Karlovarsky Region (+0.4%) only. There was a decrease in other regions, the highest in Stredocesky and Vysocina Region. The average length of overnight decreased from 3.0 to 2.9 nights; accordingly for foreign and domestic guests.
In Q2 2008, a total of 3.4 million guests was recorded at collective accommodation establishments; this was 0.1% down on Q2 2007. Foreign guests reached 1.8 million, domestic 1.6 million; this was by 0.3% more and 0.6% less, respectively. The highest number of guests (1.1 million) was at three-star hotels which also reported the highest growth in number of guests (+11.7%). At four-star hotels stood 0.8 million guests and they reported year-on-year growth by 11.1%. There were 1.2 million quests in Capital Prague; this was by 2.4% more than in the same period of the previous year. Residents, whose number increased by 15.5% compared to previous year, contributed to the growth almost from two thirds, though they represented only 11% of guests at collective accommodation establishments in Prague. The highest increase of arrivals of nonresidents was reported in Olomoucky and Zlinsky Region (+12.0% and +10.3%, respectively). In contrast, the highest drop of number of nonresidents was recorded in Vysocina (-10.3%) and Stredocesky Region (-8.3%).
At spa accommodation establishments were recorded 1.9 million overnight stays of guests; this was 2.4% down year-on-year. The number of overnight stays of nonresidents represented 0.8 million which was by 2.5% more than in the same period of the previous year. There was year-on-year growth +1.1% (of which noresidents +4.1%) in Karlovarsky Region representing approximately 50% of total overnight stays at spa accommodation establishments.
As for the country of permanent residence, most tourists came from Germany with year-on-year drop by 10.7%. The highest growth in number of overnight stays was reported for Poland (+29.7%) and Russia (+25.9%).
Net use of rooms of hotels and similar establishments was 45.4% in Q2 2008 (+0.6 percentage point year-on-year). Net use in hotels reached 49.5%; in five-star hotels 61.7% and four-star hotels 57.4%. As for the regions the highest net use of rooms was reported in Capital Prague (59.8%) and in Karlovarsky Region (58.2%); the lowest net use of rooms was in Liberecky Region (27.6%) and Kralovehradecky Region (29.7%).
Methodological note:
1) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
