More guests spent shorter time

In Q2 2007, a total of 3.4 million guests arrived at collective accommodation establishments; this was 2.3% up on Q2 2006. The number of foreign guests increased by +1.5%, the number of domestic guests went up by +3.3%. The number of overnight stays increased only by 0.6% of which foreign tourists +1.7% and domestic tourists -0.7%. An average number of overnight stays fall slightly down.

In Q2 2007, a total of 3.4 million guest arrivals was recorded at collective accommodation establishments; this was 2.3% up on Q2 2006. There were more foreign (1.8 million; this was 1.5% up year-on-year) than domestic guests (1.6 million; this was 3.3% up year-on-year).

The highest number of tourists (1.8 million) was shown at category other hotels and boarding houses; this was +3.8%. The highest growth in guest arrivals was recorded at four-stars and five-stars hotels (+5.4% and +4.5%, respectively). The number of residents increased remarkably at five-stars hotels (+54.9%), however their share in number of guests in this category was only 9.3% and in total number of guests at collective accommodation establishments even only 0.5%.

A progress in number of guests, by analysing year-on-year growth in Q1 and Q2 2007, was different in particular regions. The growth by 11.9% in Prague in Q1 2007 was lowered to 2.3% in Q2. In spite of this fact, accommodation establishments in Prague participated in the total number of guests in Q2 2007 the most (35%). Second highest share on the growth was recorded in Jihomoravsky Region (31%) because of stable increase in both quarters (+7.6% and 8.1%, respectively). Moravskolezsky Region shown the highest progress in year-on-year growth (from 0.1% to 15.0%) and its share on total growth was almost 29% in Q2. Plzensky Region switched from decrease by 6.4% in Q1 to increase by 9.4% and its share on total growth was 15%. There was a fall in both quarters in Jihocesky, Ustecky, Liberecky and Kralovehradecky Region. Only in Stredocesky Region the decrease in Q1 was followed by growth in Q2.

In Q2 2007, overnight stays of guests reached 10.1 million; this was 0.6% up on Q2 2006. The number of overnight stays of foreigners went up by 1.7%, but as for overnight stays of foreigners there was a decrease by 0.7%. An average number of overnight stays of residents decreased from 3.1 to 2.9 and as for nonresidents it went slightly up to 3.0. In total, average number of overnight stays slightly decreased.

As for the country of permanent residence, there were the same countries in Top10 as in Q2 2006 measured by number of guests and number of overnight stays as well. Only a position of some countries changed particularly because of an increase in the number of guests and overnight stays of Russians. Most tourists came from Germany; this was followed by United Kingdom, Italy and USA, in spite of the fact, that all these countries showed a decrease in Q2 2007 compared to Q2 2006. Russia was at 6 place due to the highest growth in number of guests (more than 40% up). Germany remained at first place in terms of overnight stays even though it showed a decrease by 6.9%. Russia took the second position (increase almost by one third) followed by United Kingdom, Italy and USA.

As for tourism regions, most guests arrived in Prague (1 188 thousand);this was followed by South Moravia (395 thousand), North Moravia and Silesia (277 thousand) and West Bohemia Spas (205 thousand).

At spa accommodation establishments were recorded 183 thousand guests in Q2 2007 of which 84 thousand were nonresidents; this was 10.7% and 2.2% up, respectively year-on-year. Most guests came to Karlovarsky Region (100 thousand) of which 76% were nonresidents.

Net use of rooms of hotels and boarding houses was 46.1% in Q2 2007 (+0,5 percentage point year-on-year). The highest net use was reported by five-stars hotels (64.9%) and four-stars hotels (60.3%) even though net use of rooms of five-stars and four-stars hotels fall down (by -3.6% and -2.2%, respectively) compared to the same period previous year due to an extension of capacity in these categories. Other hotels and boarding houses reached 40.2% of net use of rooms; it was +1.1 percentage point up year-on-year.




Methodological note:
1) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
