The lowest number of overnight stays in the same season from 2000

Despite the fact that the Easter holidays was in this year’s 2nd quarter compared to the previous year, the decline in the number of guests and their overnight stays went on. The number of overnight stays totalled 8.8 million; this was a minimum during all 2nd quarters from the year 2000; and went down by 8.6% year-on-year, of which foreign visitors by 10,1% and domestic by 6.9%. The use of hotels and similar establishments decreased by 3.3 p.p. on 41.1%.

The number of overnight stays totalled 8.8 million in Q2 2009; this was by 8.6% less than in the same period of the previous year. Nonresidents, with the number of overnight stays of 4.6 million, reported sharper decrease (by 10.1%) than residents (by 6.9%). A slight growth (by 1.3%) was recorded only at four-star hotels. Bad weather might be the reason for the decrease in surveyed variables at other categories of accommodation establishments (particularly at campsites where stood overnight by 31.0% less guests than last year). From regional point of view the number of overnight stays dropped in all regions, the most in Ustecky (by 20.4%) and Jihomoravsky (by 16.9%) Region.
In Q2 2009, a total of 3.1 million guests arrived at accommodation establishments; this was 8.6% down on Q2 2008. The number of nonresidents totalled 1.7 million; this was by 8.7% less; the number of residents 1.4 million; i.e. by 8.5% less. A lower number of guest was shown in all regions, the highest decrease was reported from Jihomoravsky (by 17.4%) and Liberecky (by 16.3%) Region. An increase of number of arrivals of domestic tourists was recorded only in Prague (by 1.5%) and Karlovarsky Region (by 3.1%). More foreign guests arrived only to tourist region Sumava (by 0.4%), there was no increase at NUTS 3 level.
In spite of the drop (the number of guests by 2.4%; the number of overnight stays by 5.4%) guests from Germany kept the primacy in both variables. From top ten countries an increase was shown only by tourists from Austria (by 3.1%). The highest drop in both number of guest and overnight stays was recorded by tourists from Russia (by 23.2% and 22.8%, respectively).
At spa accommodation establishments the number of overnight stays totalled 1.8 million; this was 6.2% down year-on-year. The number of overnight stays of nonresidents went down more (by 14.6%) than in terms of residents (by 0.2%). In Karlovarsky Region, which is the most important from all balneological regions, was total drop by 10.2%, of which nonresidents by 13.6%, on the contrary the number of overnight stays of residents slightly increased (by 0.5%).
Net use of rooms of hotels and similar establishments was 41.1% in Q2 2009 (i.e. by 3.3 p.p. less than in the same period of the previous year). A decrease reported all categories of hotels and boarding houses, the highest five-star hotels (by 11.2 p.p.). The highest use of rooms recorded four-star hotels (51.0%) which overcame in the past the most successful five-star hotels. Despite an increase by 1.9% boarding houses showed the lowest use. In comparison among regions the most used capacity was in Prague (55.1%) and Karlovarsky Region (53.0%); the lowest in Ustecky Region (25.6%) and Vysocina (26.8%). The highest year-on-year drop was reported by boarding houses in Jihomoravsky (by 9.7%) and Olomoucky (by 5.3%) Region.
Methodological note:
1) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
