Exports and imports decreased year-on-year

According to preliminary data in current prices, the trade balance of goods in August 2025 ended in a surplus of CZK 5.6 bn, which was lower by the same amount, year−on−year (y−o−y).

In August 2025, the total balance of international trade1) in goods2) was affected negatively in particular by a higher trade deficit in 'computer, electronic and optical products' by CZK 5.0 bn. Further, the trade surplus in 'fabricated metal products' and 'motor vehicles' fell by CZK 1.6 bn and CZK 1.3 bn, respectively.

The total trade balance was positively influenced mainly by the trade balance of 'chemicals and chemical products', where the deficit decreased by CZK 2.7 bn. The trade surplus in 'machinery and equipment' rose by CZK 1.9 bn; and the trade deficit in 'basic metals' was lower by CZK 0.7 bn.

In August 2025, the positive trade balance with EU Member States grew by CZK 4.3 bn, yoy. The trade deficit with non-EU countries increased by CZK 7.5 bn. 

Y-o-y exports decreased by 5.7% to CZK 347.8 bn while y-o-y imports fell by 4.3% to CZK 342.2 bn. August 2025 had one less working day than August 2024.

Month-on-month, the seasonally adjusted exports and imports increased by 4.7% and 3.4%, respectively.

“In August, the trade balance returned to positive values, despite the fact that exports of most commodity groups fell year-on-year. The largest decline was recorded in exports of computers and electronic and optical products, which fell by almost CZK 9 bn, which represents a year-on-year decrease in value of more than 20%,” says Jana Mazánková, Head of the Trade Balance Unit of the Czech Statistical Office.

From January to August 2025, the trade balance reached a surplus of CZK 142.5 bn representing a y−o−y decrease of CZK 14.8 bn. Since the beginning of the year, exports have risen by 3.4% and imports by 4.1%.
 

1) The international trade balance is the difference between exports from the Czech Republic and imports to the Czech Republic.
2) The international trade in goods (change of ownership) reflects export and import performance of the Czech economy, i.e. the international trade balance of the Czech Republic as well. It measures real trade in goods carried out between Czech entities and foreign ones, i.e. the change of ownership between residents and non-residents.

Notes

From 2020 onwards, data for International trade in goods (change of ownership) are subject to recalculation using an updated method, based on a higher level of detail. See Update of the compilation method – International trade in goods (change of ownership).
Since March 2022, in accordance with the methodology of Eurostat, selected data for exports and imports of military equipment and weapons are for safety reasons included in other goods codes and another territorial structure so that the macroeconomic aggregate of international trade in goods is not influenced.
Data for companies, which are subject to the reporting duty and which failed to report data (non-response), has been imputed according to exports and imports these companies reported in the previous period. Data for companies exempted from the reporting duty was estimated on the basis of the data given in the VAT return forms. The data, which was not available from the VAT return forms, is estimated on the basis of the values for previous periods.

Data for respective months of 2025 is preliminary; data up to and including year 2024 is final. When data for the reference month is published, six previous months are updated. All months with preliminary data is updated when data for January, March and July is published. Final data is published always in September of the following year.
