According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic on 31 December was 10 506 813. The total population increased by 39.3 thousand persons in 2009, while in 2008 by 86.4 thousand. The population increase due to international migration was in 2009 significantly lower than a year before: 28.3 thousand compared to 71.8 thousand. The population of the CR grew by 10.9 thousand as a result of the natural change in 2009, which was the rise by 3.7 thousand lower than in 2008 (as a consequence of lower number of births and higher number of deaths).
In 2009, 118.3 thousand children were live-born in the Czech Republic, which was by 1.2 thousand down on a year before. Thus the recent wave of increased birth rate probably reached its peak in 2008. The fertility rate, which was continuously increasing from the minimum registered in 1999, stagnated in the last year, respectively slightly decreased: the average number of children born to a woman fell from 1.50 to 1.49. However, in 2009 further, although less markedly than in the previous years, has continued the trend of the shift of the motherhood towards later age. The average age of women at first birth increased to 27.4 years, the average age of women at birth regardless of birth order to 29.4 years. A total of 46.0 thousand children were born outside marriage in 2009, which resulted in further increase in the share of children born to unmarried women. In 2009, 38.8% of all live births were born outside marriage, while in 2008 it was by 2.5 percentage points less. A total of 3.1 thousand children with other than Czech citizenship were born in last year, i.e. 2.6% of the total. This proportion has been slowly rising in the recent years (e.g. 2.2% in 2008, 1.5% in 2005).
There were 107.4 thousand of deaths registered in 2009, which was 2.5 thousand more than in 2008. The male life expectancy at birth increased by two tenths of the year to 74.2 years, female life expectancy at birth remained at the level of 2008, which was 80.1 years. The number of infant deaths and the infant mortality rate were in 2009 slightly higher than a year before: a total of 341 children died before reaching 1 year of age (338 in 2008), the infant mortality rate rose to 2.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births (2.8 in 2008). But the neonatal mortality (i.e. mortality of children within 28 days from birth) was lower than in 2008.
A total of 47.9 thousand of marriages were entered into in 2009, which was by 4.6 thousand down on a year before. It is the lowest number of marriages entered into since 1918. The drop in the interest in entering into marriage last year has been noticeable particularly among singles: provided that age-specific nuptiality rates from 2009 remain unchanged only 56% of single men and 63% of single women will entered into marriage before reaching the age of 50, while in 2008 it was 60, respectively 66%. To 31.9 years for men and 29.2 years for women increased the mean age at first marriage. Compared to 2008 were higher by 0.5 respectively 0.4 years. Also the nuptiality of divorcees was last year lower than in 2008. According to the preliminary data further marriage would now enter into 40% of divorced men and 39% of divorced women.
A total of 29.1 thousand of divorces were recorded in 2009, which was the number by 2.2 thousand lower than in 2008. The divorce rate was lower as well: the share of marriages terminated by divorce dropped from a record 50% reached in 2008 to 47% in 2009. The highest divorce rates in 2009 occurred after 2 to 4 completed years of marriages and marriage to its termination by divorce lasted an average of 12.5 years. The average age of divorcing male in 2009 was 41.8 years, female 39.0 years.
There were 40.5 thousand of abortions registered in 2009, 918 down on a year before, resulting mainly from the decrease in the number of induced abortions. Those were compared to 2008 registered 1.1 thousand fewer (total of 24.6 thousand). Thus after two years of stagnation, the number of induced abortions declined again. Also the average number of induced abortions per a woman slightly decreased (from 0.34 to 0.33) in 2009, after the period of two years, when the declining trend was interrupted. The number of terminations of the ectopic pregnancies was lower as well, while spontaneous abortions were compared to 2008 more (by 356).
The net migration of 28.3 thousand in 2009 was more than 2.5 times lower than in 2008. According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior a total of 40.0 thousand persons have immigrated to the Czech Republic in the last year, while it was 77.8 thousand in the year before. On the contrary, the number of emigrants was almost twice higher in 2009 (11.6 thousand against 6.0 thousand). The foreigners with nationality of Ukraine (a total of 8.1 thousand), Slovak Republic (5.6 thousand), Russia (4.1 thousand) and United States (2.5 thousand) dominated among immigrants. Among emigrants were most numerous foreigners with citizenship of Slovak Republic (4.2 thousand), Czech Republic (2.3 thousand), Poland (2.0 thousand) and Germany (1.8 thousand). The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Ukraine (8.1 thousand), Russia (4.1 thousand), United States (2.5 thousand) and Vietnam (2.3 thousand). The order was slightly different in 2008: Ukraine, Vietnam, Slovak Republic, and Russia. The migration balance of Czech citizens was negative in 2009, as in 2008. According to the Ministry of the Interior, on 31 December a total of 433 305 foreigners with the residence permit in the CR were registered. Foreigners accounted for 4.1% of the total Czech Republic population.
