In the first quarter of 2010, the population of the Czech Republic increased by 2.6 thousand to 10 509.4 thousand. The majority of the growth was the result of natural balance (by 1.8 thousand), the international migration balance was positive at the level of 0.7 thousand. A total of 28.6 thousand of children was born alive in the period January-March 2010, by 382 more than in the same period of the previous year. On the contrary, the number of deaths (by 2.7 thousand), marriages (by 0.7 thousand) and abortions (by 1.0 thousand) was lower this year.

According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic on 31 March was 10 509 377. The total population increased by 2.6 thousand persons during the first three months of 2010. The population increase was nearly by three-quarters due to positive trend of natural change, when the number of live births exceeded the number of deaths by 1 839. The international migration raised the total population increase by 725 persons. In 2009 the development was reverse: international migration accounted for three-quarters of the total population growth.

From January to March 2010 a total of 28.6 thousand children were born alive in the Czech Republic, which was by 382 up on a year before. From the last quarter of 2009 the number of live births has been slightly increasing again. A total of 11.4 thousand children (39.9 percent) were born outside marriage in the 1 st quarter of 2010. In the comparison with the figure of 1 st quarter of 2009 the share of children born to unmarried woman further slightly increased. From the first order children, more than a half of children were born outside marriage. In 1 st quarter of 2010 the most of children were born to woman aged 30, from the first children to woman at the age of 28.

There were 26.7 thousand of deaths in the 1 st quarter of 2010, which was 2.7 thousand less than in the same period of 2009. The average age of deceased person was 74.4 years (70.6 for men, 78.2 for women). As usual, the most frequent causes of death were a disease of the circulatory system (13.7 thousand), a neoplasm (6.8 thousand) and a disease of the respiratory system (1.7 thousand). The infant mortality rate was 2.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in the 1 st quarter of 2010 (3.0 in the 1 st quarter of 2009).

In the 1 st quarter of 2010 the decline in the interest in entering into marriage further continued. A total of 3.4 thousand of marriages were entered into, which was by 772 down on a year before. In half, it was the 1 st marriage for both engaged. The average age of groom was 37.4 years (respectively 31.6 for the first marriage) and the average age of bride was 34.1 years (resp. 28.4 years).

In January to March a total of 7.0 thousand of divorces were registered. By 58 percent, they were related to the marriage with dependent children, which were 6.1 thousand. A fifth of divorces came before 5 years from the wedding.

In the 1 st quarter of 2010 the number of abortions (9.8 thousand) was by 1.0 thousand lower than a year before. There were fewer induced abortions (by 580 to 6.0 thousand) as well as spontaneous abortions (by 451 to 3.4 thousand). A total of 2.8 thousand single women and 2.4 thousand married women underwent the induced abortion.

According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior the net migration was 725 in the last quarter. In the comparison with the same period of the previous year the number of immigrants was lower by 8.6 thousand and amounted to 6.7 thousand and, on the contrary, the number of emigrants increased to 5.9 thousand, which was four times higher than in the previous year (1.5 thousand in the 1 st quarter). The net migration by citizenship has changed as well. The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Russia (731 people) and Ukraine (726 people), followed by United States (588 people) and Vietnam (411 people). But the significant decrease in the number of citizens from Slovak Republic (by 1.2 thousand), Poland (by 958) and Germany (by 475) was registered too.

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1 st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data contain also information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
