According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic was 10 501 197 as of 30 September 2009. The population increased by 33.7 thousands in the 1 st-3 rd quarter, but even by 72.6 thousands during the same period of 2008. The population increase by external migration in the first nine months of this year was significantly lower than in 2008: 22.8 thousands compared to 59.7 thousands. The population of the CR rose by 10.8 thousands due to natural change in the 1 st-3 rd quarter, which was by 2.0 thousands less then a year ago. Whereas the population rise of the previous years resulted mainly from migration (net migration comprised 83% of total increase in 2008, 89% in 2007, 96% in 2006), its share decreased on two-thirds this year.

From January to September 89.8 thousands children were live born, i.e. by 1.7 thousands fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Continuous seven-year increase in birth rate, according to the data for the first nine months of this year, has stopped. The average number of children born to a woman was only slightly lower (1.50 in 2008, 1.49 in 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2009). The highest number of women gave a birth to their first child in the 1 st-3 rd quarter, a total of 42.3 thousands. Most often the mothers belonged to generations of 1978-1981. There were 34.6 thousands children of second birth order registered, whose mothers were mostly born in 1977 and 1978. The share of births born to unmarried women keeps growing in 2009. The latest figure is 38.5% (a total of 34.6 thousands) that is by 2.5 percent points higher as against the 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2008.

In January-June 2009, 79.0 thousands deaths were recorded, i.e. by 299 more than in the same period of the previous year. A total of 39.9 thousands persons died of circulatory system disease in the 1 st - 3 rd quarter 2009, of which 9.0 thousands died of cerebrovascular disease and 4.9 thousands of myocardial infarction. Malignant neoplasms caused 20.7 thousands deaths; external causes (i.e. transport accidents, falls, suicides, violent deaths, poisonings and the like) caused 4.3 thousands deaths. Compared to total deaths both the number of infant deaths and infant mortality rate were lower this year. The infant mortality rate was 2.7 infant deaths per 1 000 live births in the 1 st-3 rd quarter.

The number of marriages entered into in the 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2009 was by 4.6 thousands lower than in the first three quarters of 2008 and amounted to 40.9 thousands. Most marriages were registered in June (8.6 thousands) and in this month also the highest daily number of marriages was recorded: on 06/06/2009 a total of 1991 new marriages were entered into. "Interesting" date for engaged couples was also 09/09/2009 when a total of 561 marriages were entered into. Compared to the other similarly attractive dates of the previous years it was significantly lower (2.2 thousands on 08/08/2008, 4.4 thousands on 07/07/2007) but many times more than what is on working day in the midweek usual. Current level of nuptiality remains low and unlike fertility has not been reviving in recent years (it goes mainly for nuptiality of singles).

There were registered 21.8 thousands divorces in the first nine months, by 1.7 thousands fewer than in the same period of the previous year. This lower number of divorces is reflected in slight decrease of the share marriages terminated in divorce: from 49% in 2008 to 47% in the 1 st-3 rd quarter 2009. Women were plaintiffs in 65% cases. Nearly sixty percent of marriages terminated in divorce in January-September had the minors in the care (total numbers of minors stood at 18.9 thousands). The average age of man who got divorced in the 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2009 was 41.7; in case of woman it was 38.9.

In the 1 st-3 rd quarter, a total of 30.6 thousands abortions were registered, by 550 fewer than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of induced abortions (by 785 lower number). The number of terminations of the ectopic pregnancies was lower as well, whereas spontaneous abortions were registered more (by 305).

The net migration in the first nine months of 22.8 thousands was more than 2.5 times lower than a year ago (59.7 thousands).
