The population of the Czech Republic increased by 21.6 thousands to 10 489.2 thousands in the 1 st half-year 2009. The increase by external migration of 17.5 thousands comprises 80% of total increase. The population rose by natural change by 4.1 thousands. The number of children live born from January to June was by 1.6 thousands lower compared to the same period of previous year. Also the numbers of marriages (by 2.9 thousands), divorces (by 900) and abortions (by 164) were lower this year. The number of deaths was slightly higher (by 214).

According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic was 10 489 183 as of 30 June 2009. The population increased by 21.6 thousands in 1 st half-year, but during the same period of 2008 population grew more, by 48.6 thousands. The number live births exceeded the number of deaths by 4.1 thousands in the 1 st half-year 2009. In comparison with the same period of 2008 this year’s natural increase is by 1.8 thousands lower. The lower number of live births is the main cause. The population increase by external migration in the first six months of this year was significantly lower than in 2008: 17.5 thousands against 42.6 thousands.

The number of live births in January-June 2009 of 58.0 thousands was by 1.6 thousands lower compared with the same period of the previous year. The demographic development in 2 nd quarter thus confirmed the situation of 1 st quarter – after 7 years of increase, the number of live births stopped to rise. A total of 38.2% live births (22.1 thousands children) were born outside marriage in the 1 st half-year 2009. The proportion of births born to unmarried women thus keeps growing. The latest figure is by 2.3 percent points higher as against the 1 st half-year 2008. There were 1.4 thousands (i.e. 2.4% of total number) live births with other than Czech citizenship recorded.

In January-June 2009, 53.9 thousands deaths were recorded, i.e. by 214 more than in the same period of the previous year. On the contrary, the number of infant deaths and infant mortality rate were lower. The infant mortality rate was 2.7 infant deaths per 1 000 live births in 1 st half-year 2009. This year’s lower figure resulted from decrease in neonatal mortality (i.e. mortality within 28 days after birth).

The number of marriages entered into in the 1 st half-year 2009 was by 2.9 thousands lower than in the 1 st half-year 2008 and amounted to 18.7 thousands. After pick-up in 2007, the nuptiality got back at recent low level, respectively further decreased. However, the recent drop in nuptiality partly resulted from continuous process of postponement of getting married to later age. In 1.6 thousands marriages (i.e. 8.5% of total) entered into in the 1 st half-year groom or bride or both had foreigner citizenship.

There were 14.9 thousands divorces registered in the 1 st half-year 2009, that was by 900 less than in comparable period of the previous year. Divorces within 5 years after marriage comprise a fifth of all divorces, divorces after 20 and more years of duration of marriage a quarter. The average duration of marriage divorced in 1 st half-year 2009 was 13.6 years. A total of 8.7 thousands divorces involved dependent children (58.3% of all divorces), whose total number was 12.9 thousands .

The number of abortions registered in the 1 st half-year 2009 of 20.8 thousands was by 164 lower than in the previous year. The number of legally induced abortions was lower by 352, however the number of miscarriages was higher. Besides, there were 645 terminations of ectopic pregnancy recorded. Almost a tenth of all interruptions (1.2 thousands) were performed to residents with foreign citizenship.

The net migration of 17.5 thousands in the first six months of 2009 was 2.5 times lower compared to the same period of previous year. According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior (ISEO) the number of immigrants was 22.6 thousands but it was the number twice lower than in the 1 st half-year 2008. On the contrary, the number of emigrants is higher this year (5.1 thousands against 3.3 thousands). The highest net migration was reached with citizens of Ukraine (5.6 thousands), the second highest with Slovaks and the third highest with citizens of Russian federation. On 30 June, 442 506 foreigners had residence permit in the CR (data of Alien Police Service, Ministry of Interior). Foreigners comprise 4.2% of population of the CR.

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1 st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data contain also information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
