The population of the Czech Republic increased by 9.0 thousands to 10,476.5 thousands in the 1st quarter of 2009. The population resulted from the positive net migration (9.4 thousands). The natural increase was negative in the 1st quarter of 2009. From January to March 28.0 thousands of children were born, which was by 775 less than in the same period of the previous year. There were less marriages (by 1.2 thousands), divorces (by 541) and abortions (by 247) as well. Contrariwise, the number of deaths increased (by 792).

According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic stood at 10,476,543 as of 31 March 2009. The population increased by 9.0 thousands since 31 December 2008. The number of deaths exceeded the number of live births by 356 in the 1st quarter of 2009. But the negative natural increase was also recorded in the 1st quarter of 2006 so as in 2007, when the natural increase was positive in the whole year. The number of inhabitants of the Czech Republic increased by net external migration, by 9.4 thousands during the 1st quarter of 2009.
The number of live births in January-March 2009 was by 775 lower as against the same period of the previous year and amounted to 28.0 thousands. Lower number of live births in the 1st quarter in comparison to the same period of the previous year has been recorded in 2003 for the last time. A total of 38.5% live births (10.8 thousands children) were born outside marriage in the 1st quarter of 2009. The proportion of births born to unmarried women rose by 2.4 percent points in comparison to the 1st quarter of 2008.
In January-March 2009 there were registered 28.3 thousands deaths, i.e. by 792 more than in the same period of the previous year. On the contrary, the number of infant deaths and infant mortality rate were lower than in the 1st quarter of 2008. In the 1st quarter of 2009 the mortality of children up to 1 year of age was 2.9 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, when the considerable decrease was noticed in neonatal mortality (mortality of children up to 28 days of age).
The number of marriages entered into in the 1st quarter of 2009 was by 1.2 thousands lower than in the 1st quarter of 2008 and amounted to 3.9 thousands. Marriages of second or higher order represented 38% events at men and 42% at women. It is more than the annual average (27% at both men and women in the whole year 2008) so single engaged people prefer other months than the winter ones for concluding marriage more often than divorced people. In the 1st quarter of 2009 single groom was 31.5 years old in average and single bride 28.1 years.
There were registered 7.1 thousands divorces in the 1st quarter of 2009, that was by 541 less than in comparable period of the previous year. A woman was plaintiff by 65% of divorces, a total of 58% of divorces concerned marriages with dependent children. The average age of divorced man was 41.7 years and divorced woman 38.8 years.
The number of abortions registered in the 1st quarter of 2009 (10.7 thousands) was lower than in the previous year. Although the number of miscarriages was a little higher, the number of legally induced abortion decreased (6.6 thousands in 2009 as against 6.8 thousands in January-March 2008).
According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior (ISEO) the population of the Czech Republic increased by 9.4 thousands in the past quarter due to registered external migration. It was almost three times fewer than in the 1st quarter of 2008. The number of immigrants was lower 2.3times but the number of emigrants was higher this year (2.4 thousands as against 1.6 thousands). The highest net migration was reached with citizens of Ukraine (2.7 thousands), Vietnam (1.2 thousands) and Slovakia (1.1 thousands).

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data contain also information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
