Harvest of cereals will be similar to the one last year, production of rape seed will slightly increase

Publication Date: 04. 07. 2025

Product Code: 270150-25

Based on the first estimates of this year’s harvest as at 10 June, it is expected that the production of basic cereals will be 6 820 thous. tonnes; it is a slight year-on-year increase by 0.3%. Despite that, the harvest is by 6.2% lower than the five-year average. The production of rape is estimated to be 998 thous. tonnes, which is by 5.4% more than the last year; however, it is concurrently by 12.4% less than the average for the last five years.

“This year’s harvest of basic cereals will be again below the average according to projections of farmers, similarly as in the previous year. However, the harvest time has just begun and estimates may still change during the harvest. The resulting production will also be influenced by further development of the weather. The Czech Republic is self-sufficient in the production of basic cereals and part of the production is usually exported,” Renata Vodičková, Head of the Agricultural and Forestry Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), says.

The expected production of basic cereals (excluding grain maize) in an amount of 6 820 thousand tonnes is comparable to the last year´s below-average harvest (+0.3%), however, it is by 6.2% lower compared to the five-year average.

The most important cereal grown is winter common wheat the harvest of which is estimated to be in the amount of 4 564 thous. tonnes, which is by 1.3% more compared to the previous year. A significant increase in production is expected to occur in oats the harvest of which is to reach 246 thousand tonnes (+22.5%). A higher harvest is also expected for triticale (205 thous. tonnes; +4.7%) and spring common wheat (91 thous. tonnes; +0.7%).

On the other hand, a decrease in production is estimated to be in spring barley, namely down to 967 thous. tonnes (-6.1%), in winter barley down to 604 thousand tonnes (-6.0%), and in rye to 99 thousand tonnes (-6.2%).

“Rape production is expected to be higher, year-on-year, however, despite the increase, it remains below the average of the last five years. It is mainly due to unfavourable weather, persisting drought, and spring frosts. Another factor is also a smaller area, on which rape is grown this year,” Dagmar Pospíšilová from the Agricultural and Forestry Statistics Unit of the CZSO stated.

The expected harvest (production) of rape in the amount of 998 thous. tonnes is by 5.4% higher, year-on-year. However, in the comparison to the five-year average it is a decrease by 12.4%.
