In Q1 2004 , the seasonally adjusted average gross monthly wage per actual person was 2.4% up on Q4 2003 (in nominal terms).

The nominal average wage stood at CZK 16 722 and increased by CZK 1 356 (+8.8%) year-on-year . Over the same period, consumer prices rose by 2.3% and real wage by 6.4%.

In the business sphere, the average wage grew by CZK 1 345 (8.6%) to CZK 16 954, the real wage growing by 6.2%. Compared to the average rate of 2003, Q1 2004 saw a considerable acceleration of the average wage growth in this sphere, by 2.7 percentage points.

In the non-business sphere, the average wage grew by CZK 1 409 (9.7%) to CZK 15 950, the real wage growing by 7.2%. Compared to 2003, the growth slowed down moderately, by 0.2% percentage points.

Although the average wage per actual person in the business sphere was by CZK 1 004 up on the non-business sphere in nominal terms, there was still rather a higher growth of the average wages of employees in the non-business sphere. The wage development in the non-business sphere was primarily affected by the adjustment to salary and wage conditions of employees in public services and administration, necessitated by the shift from 12-grade salary scale to 16-grade one starting from 1 January. See the Analysis for details.

Given the higher proportion of persons working part-time in the non-business sphere than in the business sphere, the average wage converted to FTE employees, which takes account of the length of work load, shows the wage level difference between the two spheres better. The average wage related to FTE persons was by CZK 521 higher in the business sphere, amounting to CZK 17 353.

The highest average wage per actual persons (by CZ-NACE section) was recorded for financial intermediation (CZK 36 053) and the lowest for agriculture, hunting and forestry (CZK 11 501).

The development of the growth of the average wage in the industries (economic activities by CZ-NACE division) rather significant in terms of employment differed:
- the lowest growth of average wage was recorded for ‘retail trade except for motor vehicles and motorcycles; repair of personal and household goods’ (+6.4%), with the nominal value being well below the national average (-CZK 3 920)
- on the other hand, the highest growth of average wage was recorded for ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ (+10.5%), with the nominal value being above the national average (+ CZK 2 288).

Inter-industry wage differentiation grew moderately in Q1 2004. The variation coefficient of average wages increased by 0.3 percentage points to 36.1% y-o-y.

Internationally owned companies achieve the highest average wages in the long run (CZK 21 332), whereas the lowest wages are recorded for entities owned by cooperatives (CZK 10 765).
