According to this year’s last yield and production forecast made on 15 October 2007, the Czech Statistical Office is expecting the production of 7 051 thousand tonnes of cereals in total, 612 thousand tonnes of grain maize, 839 thousand tonnes of potatoes in total, 2 683 thousand tonnes of sugar beet, 2 thousand tonnes of linseed and 2 thousand tonnes of fibre flax.
* * *
Production of cereals (main cereals and grain maize) should be 7 051 thousand tonnes, average yield 4.55 t/ha. In comparison to 2006, production is by 679 thousand tonnes (10.7%) and yield by 0.35 t/ha (8.3%) higher. The forecasted production of 612 thousand tonnes of grain maize is by 6 thousand tonnes (1.0%) higher than last year, expected yield 6.58 t/ha is by 2.5% lower.
Compared to potato production forecast from September, the figure increased by 54 thousand tonnes to 839 thousand tonnes. This year’s average yield 26.28 t/ha is by 14.0% higher than in 2006 (23.05 t/ha).
The production of sugar beet is expected at 2 683 thousand tonnes, which is by 455 thousand tonnes (-14.5%) less than in 2006. The forecasted yield of 49.44 t/ha is by 2.04 t/ha (-4.0%) lower.
The expected production and yield of linseed should reach 2 052 tonnes and 0.78 t/ha respectively, that of fibre flax 1 913 tonnes and 2.72 t/ha respectively. Production forecast for linseed and fibre flax is by 74.3% and 78.2% respectively lower than in 2006. The fall in expected production of both crops is mainly due to a sharp decrease in sown area – in comparison to 2006 the area under linseed fell by 66.4% to 2 642 ha and the area under fibre flax decreased by 75.7% to 704 ha, and partly due to lower expected yield by 23.5% and 9.9% respectively.
A slight increase in hay production from permanent grassland (pasture and meadow) is forecasted for 2007. The production should reach 2 807 thousand tonnes (+0.5%). The increase is fully attributable to a larger production area – by 43 thousand tonnes in comparison to 2006, the yield of 3.01 t/ha is by 0.13 t/ha (-4.1%) lower.
