Harvest forecast - October 2004

A lower estimate of sugar beet production

According to the latest harvest and hectare yield estimates, made as at 15 October 2004, the Czech Statistical Office expects the harvest of grain maize to be higher by 62 thousand tonnes (+13.0%), of total cereals by 3 091 thousand tonnes (53.9%), and of potatoes by 235 thousand tonnes in total (+27.9%), all compared with the final harvest figures of 2003. The harvest of industrial sugar beet is expected to drop by 128 thousand tonnes (-3.7%) year-on-year, while the harvest of hay from permanent grassland should rise by 816 thousand tonnes (+38.6%).

Hence, the estimated production of cereals in total (main cereals plus grain maize) is 8 829 thousand tonnes, of potatoes 1 076 thousand tonnes, of industrial sugar beet 3 367 thousand tonnes, and of hay from permanent grassland 2 929 thousand tonnes.

The hectare yields of selected crops exceed their last year’s levels. The expected yields are 5.52 mt/ha for cereals (+1.56 mt/ha), 24.75 mt/ha for potatoes in total (+5.4 mt/ha), 47.36 mt/ha for industrial sugar beet (+2.16 mt/ha), and 3.41 mt/ha for hay (+1.00 mt/ha), compared to 2003.
