Weather delays start of cereals and rape harvest

Pursuant to the first estimate of harvest as at 20 June 2009 it is supposed that the production of basic cereals reaches an amount of 6 622 thous. tonnes of grain. Matching the year 2008 finals it is by 875 thous. tonnes less (- 11,7 %). Also the production of rape is expected to be down by 52 thous. tonnes (- 5,0 %).

Estimated production of basic cereals in amount of 6 622 thous. tonnes of grain is by 875 thous. tonnes less (- 11,7 %) matching last year. This decrease is caused by both lower sowing areas of basic cereals by 7 381 ha and lower yields by 0,58 t/ha. Forthcoming harvest is influenced by weather, cold May and June with high precipitation. In comparison with last year it is need to take into account that the years 2008 and 2004 were the most productive in the history of the Czech Republic.
The production of the most spread cereal, winter wheat (31,2 % of total sowing areas of agricultural crops) is expected in an amount of 3 984 thous. tonnes, it is by 487 thous. tonnes (- 10,9 %) less matching 2008. In spite of sowing area of winter wheat increases by 33 thous. ha in comparison with 2008 lower yield in amount of 5,02 t/ha, by 0,86 t/ha less than in 2008, causes an expected decrease. Expected production of spring barley which takes 12,6 % of total sowing areas of agricultural crops, is estimated in an amount of 1 334 thous. tonnes, it is by 250 thous. tonnes (- 15,8 %) down matching 2008. Yield of spring barley is expected in amout of 4,17 t/ha, it is by 0,47 t/ha less (- 10,1 %) matching 2008. In this year is higher yield in amount of 3,90 t/ha expected by spring wheat only whose production should reach an amount of 147 thous. tonnes.
Production of rape (13,9 % of total sowing areas of agricultural crops) is expected in an amount of 997 thous. tonnes, it is decrease by 52 thous. tonnes (-5 %) matching 2008. Expected yield of rape is supposed in an amout of 2,81 t/ha. Supposed decline of rape production is also caused by limitation of sowing areas by 2 thous. ha. Expected production of early potatoes is 24 thous. tonnes with a yield 11,52 t/ha. In the year 2008 the harvest was in an amout of 28 thous. tonnes with a yield of 16,16 t/ha.
