Harvest forecast - June 2004

This year’s first estimates of agricultural crops are very favourable

Publication Date: 09. 07. 2004

Product Code: r-2102-04

This year’s first estimate of hectare yields and crop production made as at 20 June 2004 assumes the harvest of main cereals to reach 6,934 thousand tonnes (i. e. by 31,8 %) in terms of grain. The estimated production of rape and early potatoes is 731 thousand tonnes (i. e. by 88,6 %) and 122 thousand tonnes (i. e. by 6,9 %), respectively.

Compared to the final results for 2003 the production of main cereals is estimated to be higher by 1 672 thousand tonnes, of rape by 344 thousand tonnes and of early potatoes by 8 thousand tonnes.

The production of agricultural crops is expected higher because of larger sowing areas of main cereals (+149 thousand ha) and rape (+8.5 thousand ha) on the one hand and higher average hectare yields on the other hand. The yields expected are 4.58 t/ha for main cereals (3.86 t/ha in 2003), 2.82 t/ha for rape (1.55 t/ha) and 19.07 t/ha for early potatoes (16.08 t/ha).

The favourable development of the production expected this year primarily results from the good wintering of the crops sown in the autumn of 2003 and the rather cold weather with non-fluctuating precipitation in the spring months.
