Harvest forecast - July 2007

According to this year’s second yield forecast made on 15 July 2007, the CZSO is expecting the production of 6 249 thousand tonnes of main cereals. This figure is by 147 thousand tonnes (2.4%) higher in comparison to June’s forecast and by 484 thousand tonnes (8.4%) higher than the 2006 harvest. Rape production should reach 969 thousand tonnes, i.e. 10.1% more compared to the 2006 harvest.
The expected production of 6 249 thousand tonnes of main cereals is by 484 thousand tonnes (8.4%) above the 2006 harvest. The area under the main cereals increased by 25 388 ha (1.8%) to 1 456 248 ha; the yield is expected to increase by 0.26 t/ha (6.5%) to 4.29 t/ha.
 
The higher production forecast for main cereals is mainly due to winter cereals. The area under winter wheat, which is the most spread cereal in the Czech Republic, increased by 30 574 ha (4.2%) and the yield rose to 4.70 t/ha (2.6%). The area under rye and triticale increased from 63 501 ha in 2006 to 87 554 ha this year (37.9%), and expected yield from 3.25 t/ha to 4.02 t/ha (23.7%).
There was a decrease in the area sown of spring barley, spring wheat and spring oats from 545 321 ha to 489 077 ha (-10.3%). The area under spring barley, which is 369 177 ha this year, has fallen by 56 456 (-13.3%). The yield of spring barley is expected at 3.74 t/ha, i.e. a moderate increase of 5.4% on 2006.
 
The production forecast for rape is 969 thousand tonnes, which is by 10.1% more than the 2006 harvest. The higher production is due to a 15.5% increase in area under rape; the yield is expected to decrease to 2.87 t/ha (from 3.01 t/ha in 2006).
 
The expected poppy production is 38 thousand tonnes, i.e. up 20.3% on 2006. The increase results from a higher yield, which is forecast to reach 0.67 t/ha, i.e. up 21.8%; the area under poppy decreased by 1.5%.
