Favourable weather during harvestime raised the estimate of this year’s yield of cereals

Based on the data as at 15 August 2004, the CZSO estimates the production of main cereals, potatoes in total and industrial sugar beat to reach 7 753 thousand tonnes, 894 thousand tonnes and 3 325 thousand tonnes, respectively. Compared to the harvest a year ago, the estimate of the production of main cereals is higher by 2 492 thousand tonnes (+47.4%) and of potatoes by 211 thousand tonnes (+31.0%), while the that of the production of industrial sugar beet is lower by 170 thousand tonnes (-4.9%).
The high estimated production of main cereals and rape is influenced by a most very favourable course of both the vegetation period and especially of the key harvest period.
The yield of main cereals is expected at 5.13 t/ha (4.62 t/ha estimated in July), which translates into an increase of 0.51 t/ha (by 10,9 %). The yield of rape is estimated at 3.42 t/ha (July estimate 2.84 t/ha) – an increase of 0.58 t/ha (by 20,3 %) compared to July.
The total yield of potatoes (24.85 t/ha) is also higher, by 5.88 t/ha compared to the actual yield in the previous year. As for the yield of industrial sugar beat estimated at 46.77 t/ha, it is higher by 1.57 t/ha compared to the previous year’s yield. Further year to year comparison the CZSO performed also the matching of August estimates to averages for period 1993 – 2003.
Production of the main market crops is estimated as follows: 4 425 thousand tonnes of winter wheat (i.e. +97.1% up on the actual production in 2003) and 1 696 thousand tonnes of spring barley (-3.8% down on the production in 2003). The estimate of the production of rape was raised to 886 thousand tonnes (+128.5% up on last year’s actual production). The production of late ware potatoes now estimated at 581 thousand tonnes translates into an increase of 29.9% on last year.
