Harvest forecast - July 2004

The estimate of good harvest confirmed

Publication Date: 05. 08. 2004

Product Code: r-2102-04

Based on the updated estimate of hectare yields and production made as at 15 July 2004, the CZSO anticipates the production of main cereals to reach 6 994 thousand tonnes of grain. Compared to the situation a year ago and to the estimate made as at 20 June this year, this translates into increases of 32.9% (+1 732 thousand tonnes) and 0.9% (+60 thousand tonnes), respectively.

The higher estimated production of main cereals and rape is due to the larger sowing areas and wintering of winter crops. The subsequent course of the vegetation growth has so far been favourable for this year’s harvest, too. Only the rather cold end of June postponed the start of the harvest by about 2 weeks in comparison with the year 2003 when the harvest was begun earlier.

The estimated average hectare yield of main cereals 4.62 t/ha (4.58 t/ha estimated in June) exceeds its level from last year’s final harvest (3.86 t/ha). The average hectare yield of rape should be also higher: 2.84 t/ha (1.55 t/ha in 2003; June estimate: 2.82 t/ha).

Production of the main market crops measured is estimated as follows: - 3 988 thousand tonnes of winter wheat (+77.7% on the production in 2003) and 1 516 thousand tonnes of spring barley (-14.0% down on the production in 2003).

The harvest of early potatoes is estimated to reach 139 thousand tonnes (+22.1% on 2003). The expected production of rape was raised to 737 thousand tonnes (+90.0% on 2003).
