In 2023, the number of live births stood at 91.1 thousand, 10.2 thousand fewer than a year earlier. It was the second significant year-on-year decline in the number of births in a row. The decrease in births went hand in hand with a fall in the total fertility rate to 1.45 children per woman. The average age of mothers at the birth of the first child increased by 0.8 to 28.9 years over the last ten years.
