Increasing numbers of started dwellings continued

In Q1 2008, construction of 9 570 dwellings was started, i.e. up by 4.4% in comparison to Q1 2007. A total of 9 158 dwellings were completed, i.e. by 9.8% up on Q1 2007. There were 171 383 dwellings under construction, i.e. up by 1.0% year-on-year.

Dwellings started
In Q1 2008, 9 570 dwellings were started, which was by 4.4% more (+405 dwellings) year-on-year. Increases were recorded for dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings (by 18.4%, i.e. +525 dwellings) and dwellings in family houses (by 3.5%, i.e. +158 dwellings). Decreases were observed in all of the other categories.
Dwellings completed
In Q1 2008, 9 158 dwellings were completed, i.e. a year-on-year growth of 9.8% (+821 dwellings). The highest increases were registered for dwellings completed in family houses (by 22.1%, i.e. +813 dwellings), dwellings completed as extensions to multi-dwelling buildings (by 51.0%, i.e. +157 dwellings) and dwellings in converted non-residential spaces (by 37.4%, i.e. +71 dwellings). Decreases were recorded for dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings (by 3.0%, i.e. -102 dwellings) and dwellings in community care service homes and boarding houses (by 57.4%, i.e. -93 dwellings).
Dwellings under construction
The total of 171 383 dwellings under construction as at 31 March 2008 was by 1.0% (+1730) dwellings) higher year-on-year. The highest share in dwellings under construction was recorded for family houses (50.2%), the lowest for dwellings in converted non-residential spaces (1.3%).
Dwellings under construction are on the increase in the long term because numbers of dwellings started increase more rapidly than numbers of dwellings completed; dwellings whose construction has been suspended are also included.
Dwelling modernisations (upon building permit)
In Q1 2008, modernisation of 5 165 dwellings was completed, which was by 2.8% less year-on-year.

*) According to information by the Ministry for Regional Development there was a decrease in the mortgage market in Q1 2008. In total 14.6 thousand mortgage loans were signed amounting to CZK 25.7 billion, which was down by 15.6% and 8.7% respectively.
