A new senator elected in the by-election in the city of Brno already in the 1st round

In the election district No. 60 Brno-město the by-election to the Senate finished. Zdeněk Papoušek was elected senator; he won 59.40% and thus became historically the 22nd senator elected already in the 1st round of the elections. The turnout reached 20.62%.

“Zdeněk Papoušek was supported by 11 788 voters in total; Karin Podivínská, who ranked second, received 21.92% of votes and 4 350 voters were voting for her. Other candidates obtained between 5.81 and 2.67% of votes,” Eva Krumpová, the First Vice-President of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), stated.

The highest interest in the elections was in the Brno-Ořešín city section where 31.36% of eligible voters came to vote. On the other hand, the lowest number of voters, 17.40%, was recorded in the Brno-sever city section.

In total, 5 men and 1 woman were standing in the by-election for the senatorial seat. The average age of candidates was 58.2 years. The youngest candidate was 46 years old when the elections took place and the oldest one was 70 years old. Three candidates were without political affiliation, five out of six are resident in the City of Brno.

The by-election took place in 122 electoral wards in total. Besides the central workplace of the Czech Statistical Office in Prague and the Regional Office of the CZSO in Brno also 11 places of handover created at authorities of city sections of the Statutory town of Brno were involved in the processing.

Data from the first ward were taken over by the Czech Statistical Office at 2:24 p.m., the last ward was processed at 4:43 p.m. On Monday, 20 January 2025, the results of voting will be negotiated by the State Electoral Committee and after their approval they will be published in the Collection of Laws of the Czech Republic.
