Industrial production was by 2.6% up month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

The year-on-year industrial production index reached 108.1% or 112.6% (working days adjusted, WDA; there were two less working days in October 2004 compared to October 2003). The month-on-month IPI has been growing since 2000 except for August 2002 (floods). Sales in industry at constant prices (year 2000) were higher by 6.6% or 11.3% (WDA).

The industrial production increased most in the following CZ-NACE activities:
- ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (parts and accessories for computers, electronic parts for line telephony)
- ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (parts and accessories for motor vehicles, chassis for trailers, semi-trailers and other vehicles)
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (steel tubes, equipment for scaffolding, shuttering, propping)

Decreases in the industrial production were recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (tanning and dressing of leather, men’s town footwear with leather uppers)
- ‘electricity, gas and water supply‘ (electricity, steam and hot water supply)
- ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ (knitted and crocheted fabrics, tyre cord fabrics)

As for the main industrial groupings, the highest increases in production were recorded for ‘capital goods’ (+21.1%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+7.9%). Production of ‘consumer durables’ decreased (-1.9%).

The high growth of ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+34.6%), ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products’ (+15.6%) and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+13.2%) contributed to the increase of total sales in industry.

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 14.8% at constant prices (+16.9% at current prices), and their share in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 49.4% (current prices). The highest constant price increases in the direct export sales were recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+39.9%), ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (+25.9%) and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+24.0%). Direct export sales dropped most in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-50.8%), ‘manufacture of leather and leather products‘ (-14.8%) and ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-13.5%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 12.3% at constant prices (+14.5% at current prices), and their share in total sales stood at 53.3% (current prices). Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 18.2% at constant prices (+18.9% at current prices) and accounted for 73.4% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry remained at the level of October 2003. The employment rose in ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’, ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’. Year-on-year decreases occurred in ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’, ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’.
Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 17 477, rising by 4.9% year-on-year. Unit wage costs were 1.6% down. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 124.60 and increased by 11.5%. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 6.6% up; the productivity per hour grew by 13.3%.

New orders in industrial enterprises classified to selected CZ-NACE activities were worth CZK 113.9 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 73.1 billion. The year-on-year index of new orders in total was 120.1%, of which the one of new non-domestic orders made up 123.1%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ (index 128.3%) and ‘manufacture of basic metals’ (index 138.8%). The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of other transport equipment’ (index 42.4%) and ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products’ (index 83.9%).
