Growth of industrial production and new orders

In May 2006, seasonally adjusted industrial production was up by 3.4% month-on-month. The year-on-year industrial production index reached 112.2% or 113.8% (working days adjusted). Sales from industrial activity at constant prices (the year 2000) rose by 12.8%. Industrial new orders were up by 30.9% year-on-year.

Seasonally adjusted industrial production was up by 3.4% month-on-month in May 2006. The trend grew by 0.9% (Table 5).

The year-on-year industrial production index reached 112.2% (or 113.8% working days adjusted, WDA; May 2006 had one working day less than May 2005). The growth of industrial production (Table 6) was most affected by ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+19.8%, raising the growth of industry by 3.8 percentage points in total), ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+18.1%, raising the growth by 2.3 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+18.5%, raising the growth by 2.2 p.p.). A decrease in industrial production was recorded for ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-4.1%, decreasing the growth by 0.3 p.p.) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-5.6%, decreasing the growth by 0.1 p.p.).
As for the main industrial groupings, increases in production were recorded for ‘consumer durables’ (+26.0%), ‘capital goods’ (+18.6%), ‘intermediate goods’ (+13.2%) and ‘consumer non-durables’ (+4.2%), while production of energy’ decreased (-0.8%).
Sales from industrial activity at constant prices (the year 2000) rose by 12.8% (or 15.5% working days adjusted, WDA), year-on-year. The increase of sales from industrial activity was most contributed to by ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+19.8%, raising the growth of industry by 4.0 percentage points in total), ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+18.0%, raising the growth of industry by 2.5 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+17.3%, raising the growth of industry by 1.9 p.p.). Sales in industry decreased most in ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-6.1%, decreasing the growth by 0.2 p.p.).
Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased by 14.8% at constant prices (+11.8% at current prices), and their proportion in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 48.7% (current prices).
Sales from industrial activity of foreign-controlled enterprises were up by 20.4% at constant prices (+19.1% at current prices), and their proportion in total sales stood at 58.6% (current prices). Direct export sales of industrial foreign-controlled enterprises increased by 18.0% at constant prices (+15.3% at current prices) and made up 75.5% of total sales of these enterprises at current prices.
The average number of employees in the industry in May went up by 1.8% (+19.7 thousand persons) year-on-year. It increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+9.3%), ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+6.0%) and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+5.9%). Employment decreased most in ‘manufacture of textiles’ (-7.2%), ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-4.4%) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-3.9%).
The average monthly nominal wage in May rose by 8.0% year-on-year and amounted to CZK 20 089. The average hourly wage increased by 8.1% and was CZK 134.0. Labour productivity in industry (sales per employee) rose by 10.9% and hourly labour productivity by 11.0%. Unit wage costs were down by 2.6%.
Industrial new orders in selected CZ-NACE activities concluded in May were worth CZK 152.4 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic industrial new orders made up CZK 91.7 billion. The industrial new orders index (y-o-y) in total stood at 130.9%, of which the non-domestic industrial new orders index was 124.6%. Non-domestic industrial new orders increased most in ‘manufacture of medical, precision and optical instruments, watches and clocks’ (index 233.6%), ‘manufacture of basic metals‘ (index 143.7%), ‘manufacture of electrical machinery and apparatus‘ (index 135.2%). Non-domestic industrial new orders dropped in ‘manufacture of other transport equipment‘ (index 88.1%), ‘manufacture of wearing apparel, dressing and dyeing of fur’ (index 90.1%) and ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products‘ (index 90.8%). The volume of orders in selected CZ-NACE activities was CZK 354.0 billion at the end of May 2006.
