Industrial production was 0.7% up month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).
Year-on-year industrial production index reached 112.7% or 110.4% (working days adjusted, WDA; there was one more working day in May 2004 compared to May 2003). Sales in industry at constant prices (year 2000) were higher by 16.3% or 13.8% (WDA).
The following CZ-NACE activities were main contributors to the rise in the industrial production:
- ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (parts and accessories for motor vehicles, reconditioning of railway and tramway locomotives and rolling-stocks)
- ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (wire and cable, installation of computers)
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (iron, steel and ferro-alloys; iron or steel reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers)
Decreases in the industrial production were mainly recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (luggage, handbags and school satchels, men’s town footwear with leather uppers)
- ‘mining and quarrying except energy producing materials’ (concentrates of iron ore, marble and travertine)
- ‘manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco’ (mineral waters, cigarettes).
Industrial production grew in all main industrial groupings, with the highest growth rates occurring in ‘capital goods’ and ‘consumer durables’ (+21.0% and 15.7%, respectively).
‘Manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+44.9%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+22.7%) and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+19.9%) were responsible for the high growth of total sales in industry.
Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 21.9% at constant prices (+27.1% at current prices) and their share in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 49.4% (current prices). The highest constant price growth was recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+55.4%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+27.2%) and ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres‘ (+25.2%), while decreases occurred in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-41.8%) and ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-3.2%).
Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 21.8% at constant prices (+25.3% at current prices) and their share in total sales stood at 53.63% (current prices). Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 24.4% at constant prices (+29.3% at current prices) and accounted for 72.5% of their total sales.
The average number of employees in the industry fell by 0.9% (9.9 thousand persons) y-o-y; it was not on the decrease in last three months. The employment fell y-o-y especially in ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’, ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’; on the other hand it increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’.
Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 17 592, rising by 5.2% y-o-y. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 120.40 and decreased by 0.3% y-o-y. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 17.3% up and unit wage costs were 10.3% down y-o-y.
New orders in industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE industries reached CZK 117.4 billion (current prices) in May 2004 of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 73.4 billion. The y-o-y index of new orders in total was 142.8% of which new non-domestic orders made up 152.9%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of basic metals’ – their y-o-y indices were 154.4% and 175.6%, respectively.
