Publication Date: 11. 05. 2005

Product Code: r-8001-05

In March 2005, seasonally adjusted industrial production remained unchanged month-on-month. Its trend rose by 0.3% month-on-month (Table 5) and had been growing for the third month already.

The year-on-year industrial production index reached 100.1%. Sales in industry at constant prices (the year 2000) grew by 1.7%. Growth rates of the industrial production index and the index of sales in industry were influenced by the high reference basis of March 2004 and also by the fact that this year’s March had 1 less working day than last year’s one. In March 2005, an employee engaged in industry worked 9.9 hours less than in March 2004

Industrial production increased most in the following CZ-NACE activities:
- ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (self-propelled earth moving, dairy machinery)
- ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (motor vehicles with a diesel or semi-diesel engine, reconditioning of railway and tramway locomotives and rolling-stock)
- ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (rubber hose reinforced with textiles, prefabricated buildings of plastics).

The largest decreases in industrial production were recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (ski-boots, tanning and dressing of leather)
- ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’ (non-wired sheets of glass, refractory ceramic constructional goods)
- ‘manufacture of wood and wood products’ (coniferous wood in chips, prefabricated buildings of wood)

As far as main industrial groupings are concerned, increases were recorded for production of ‘energy’ (+1.0%), ‘intermediate goods’ (+1.0%) and ‘consumer non-durables’ (+0.5%), while production of ‘consumer durables’ and ‘capital goods’ decreased (-9.5% and –1.5%, respectively).

High growth in ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+12.6%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+10.7%) and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (+6.1%) contributed to the growth of total sales in industry.

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased at constant prices (+2.5%) and dropped at current prices (-0.8%), and their proportion sales in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 48.1% (current prices). The greatest increases in direct export sales at constant prices were recorded for ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (+35.1%), ‘manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco’ (+21.6%) and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+9.8%). On the other hand, they dropped most in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-37.1%), ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (-20.0%) and ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ (-9.7%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 5.9% at constant prices (+4.5% at current prices), and their proportion in total sales stood at 54.1% (current prices). Their direct export sales decreased at current prices (-0.3%) and increased in constant prices (+4.3%) and accounted for 73.2% of the total sales of these enterprises.

The average number of employees in the industry went up by 0.7% (+7.4 thousand persons) year-on-year. The employment increased in ‘manufacture of transport equipment’, ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ and ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and decreased most in ‘mining and quarrying, except of energy producing materials’, ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’, and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’.

The average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 17 593, rising by 4.1% year-on-year. The average hourly wage increased by 11.1% and stood at CZK 119.60. Labour productivity (sales per employee) grew by 1.0% and productivity per hour by 7.8%. Unit wage costs were 3.1% up.

New orders in industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE activities were worth CZK 117.9 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 78.6 billion. The year-on-year index of new orders in total was 99.0%, of which the one of new non-domestic orders was 100.0%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus’ (144.2%), ‘manufacture of office machinery and computers’ (114.9%) and ‘manufacture of chemicals and chemical products’ (index 112.4%). The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased most in ‘manufacture of other transport equipment’ (index 68.2%), ‘manufacture of wearing apparel, dressing and dyeing of fur’ (index 79.2%) and ‘manufacture of medical, precision and optical instruments, watches and clocks‘ (index 81.7%).
