Industrial production was 2.8% up month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

Year-on-year industrial production index reached 115.3% or 110.8% (working days adjusted, WDA). There were two more working days in March 2004 compared to March 2003. Sales in industry at constant prices (average prices of 2000) were higher by 15.7% or 11.0% (WDA).

The following CZ-NACE activities were main contributors to the rise in industrial production:
- ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (wire and cable, colour TV tubes)
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (basic iron and steel and ferro-alloys, iron and steel tubes)
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (saddlery and harness, town footwear with leather uppers).

Decreases in industrial production were mainly recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (machine-tools, textile spinning machines).

Industrial production grew in all main industrial groupings, with the highest growth rates occurring in ‘consumer durables’ and ‘intermediate goods’ (+33.8% and 21.0%, respectively).

‘Manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+36.6%), ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+20.9%) and ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+19.0%) were responsible for the high growth of total sales in industry.

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 21.6% at constant prices (+24.1% at current prices) and their share in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 50.0% (at current prices). The highest constant price growth was recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+45.1%) ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+30.3%) and ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products‘ (+24.8%), while decreases occurred in ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-23.4%), ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-12.4%), and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-7.9%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 20.1% at constant prices (+21.8% at current prices) and their share in total sales stood at 53.8% (at current prices). Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 23.9% at constant prices (+26.1% at current prices) and accounted for 72.6% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry fell by 1.5% (17.5 thousand persons) y-o-y. The employment fell in most CZ-NACE activities, especially in ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ and ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’; it increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’.

Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 16 939, rising by 10.8% y-o-y. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 107.9 and decreased by 0.5% y-o-y. In March 2004 the employee worked 16 hours more on average. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 17.5% up and unit wage costs were 5.7% down y-o-y.

New orders in industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE industries reached CZK 119.2 billion (current prices) in March 2004 of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 79.0 billion. The y-o-y index of new orders in total was 125.4% of which new non-domestic orders made up 132.1%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ – their y-o-y indices were 136.6% and 134.9%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur’ (index 90.5%).
