Publication Date: 09. 09. 2004

Product Code: r-8001-04

Industrial production was 1.4% up month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

The year-on-year industrial production index reached 111.0% or 118.0% (working days adjusted, WDA; there were three less working days in July 2004 compared to July 2003). It had already been the fifth month of the double-figure growth of the industry. Sales in industry at constant prices (year 2000) were higher by 5.1% or 12.0% (WDA).

The highest increases in the industrial production were reported for the following CZ-NACE activities:
- ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (parts and accessories for computers and other data processing machines, radio transmission apparatus with reception apparatus)
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (basic iron and steel and production of ferro-alloys, tubes, pipes and hollow profiles)
- ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (parts and accessories for motor vehicles; rail goods wagons including self-discharging wagons, tank wagons, etc.)

Decreases in the industrial production were recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (refinery feedstock, lubricating oils)
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (tanning and dressing of leather, sports footwear)
- ‘manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco’ (cigarettes, semi-milled or wholly milled rice)

Of the main industrial groupings the highest increase in production was recorded for ‘capital goods’ (+26.1%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+14.4%). Production of ‘energy’ and ‘consumer non-durables’ decreased (-3.9% and -3.6%, respectively).

The high growth of ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+27.7%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+8.8%) and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+8.7%) contributed to the increase in total sales in industry.

Direct export sales by industrial enterprises rose by 8.6% at constant prices (+11.4% at current prices), and their share in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 46.9% (current prices). The highest constant price increases in the sales were recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+34.2%), ‘manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco’ (+20.3%) and ‘manufacture of chemicals and chemical products’ (+17.1%). A fall in direct export sales occurred in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-43.6%), ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (-9.2%) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-6.8%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 11.1% at constant prices (+14.3% at current prices), and their share in total sales stood at 52.3% (current prices). Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 10.1% at constant prices (+12.1% at current prices) and accounted for 70.8% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry dropped by 0.6% (-7.4 thousand persons) year-on-year. Employment fell especially in ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’, ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’; on the other hand, it increased in ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’, ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’.
The average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 17 655, rising by 6.6%. The average hourly wage stood at CZK 143.20 and increased by 12.9%. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 5.8% up, productivity per hour grew by 12.1%, and unit wage costs were 0.8% up. (All year-on-year.)

New orders signed in July 2004 in industrial enterprises reached CZK 100.7 billion (current prices) in selected CZ-NACE activities, of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 63.7 billion. The year-on-year index of new orders in total was 124.6%, of which new non-domestic orders made up 129.6%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ – their year-on-year indices were 138.5% and 130.5%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of wearing apparel, dressing and dyeing of fur’ (index 74.6%) and ‘manufacture of textiles’ (index 98.1%).
