Industry - January 2004

Considerable growth of metallurgy production

Publication Date: 11. 03. 2004

Product Code: r-8001-04

Industrial production was 0.9% down month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

The year-on-year industrial production index reached 103.8% or 105.9% (working days adjusted, WDA). Industrial production had thus been growing continuously seventeen months already. There was one less working day in January 2004 compared to January 2003. Sales in industry at constant prices (average prices of 2000) were higher by 2.0% or 4.2% (WDA).

The following CZ-NACE activities were main contributors to the rise in industrial production:
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (iron and steel tubes welded, aluminium doors, windows and their frames)
- ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products; publishing and printing’ (gummed or self-adhesive paper and paperboard, publishing of sound recordings on compact discs)
- ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (radiators, parts and accessories for motorcycles)
- ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (plastic tubes and pipes, plastic doors, windows and their frames)

Decreases occurred mainly in:
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (sports footwear with outer soles and uppers of rubber or plastic, industrial services)
- ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (motor gasoline, refinery feedstock)
- ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (other machinery of HS 8436, textile spinning machines).

Of the main industrial groupings a high increase was recorded for ‘consumer durables’ (+31.0%). Production of ‘capital goods’ saw a decrease of 2.5%.

‘Manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+12.5%), ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+11.9%) and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+6.1%) were responsible for the high growth of total sales in industry. The sales dropped most in ‘manufacture of food products; beverages and tobacco’ (-10.5%), ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-10.0%) and ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-8.2%).

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 5.7% at constant prices (+7.4% at current prices) and their percentage in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 48.2%. The highest constant price growth was recorded for ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+20.4%), and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+9.6%), while decreases occurred in ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-13.1%), ‘electricity, gas and water supply’
(-10.6%), and ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (-5.9%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 3.5% at constant prices (+4.5% at current prices) and their percentage in total sales stood at 51.9%. Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 5.5% at constant prices (+7.0% at current prices) and accounted for 72.3% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry fell by 2.4% (27.7 thousand persons) y-o-y. The employment fell in most CZ-NACE activities, especially in ‘manufacture of textile and textile products’, ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’, and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ and increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’.
Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 16 461, rising by 5.9% y-o-y. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 115.2 and rose by 7.5% y-o-y. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was by 4.6% up and unit wage costs by 1.2% y-o-y.

The volume of new orders signed in January 2004 by industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE industries reached CZK 103.7 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 61.4 billion. The y-on-y index of new orders was 107.2% of which that of new non-domestic orders stood at 100.3%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were concluded in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ – their y-o-y indices were 109.9% and 110.7%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus’ (index 56.6%) and ‘manufacture of chemicals and chemical products’ (index 71.8%).
