Publication Date: 08. 04. 2004

Product Code: r-8001-04

Industrial production was 1.5% up month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

Year-on-year industrial production index reached 107.1%. Sales in industry at constant prices (average prices of 2000) were higher by 8.6%.

The following CZ-NACE activities were main contributors to the rise in industrial production:
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (cold formed sections obtained from flat products, other structures principally of sheet)
- ‘manufacture of wood and wood products except furniture’ (spruce and fir wood, impregnation and preservation of wood)
- ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products’ (synthetic organic colouring matters, sulphonamides)

Decreases occurred mainly in:
- ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (lignite/brown coal; lignite patent fuels – briquettes; drilling services incidental to gas and oil extraction, excluding surveying)
- ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (gas, steam and hot water supply)
- ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ (woven fabrics of jute, women’s or girls´ overcoats).

Of the main industrial groupings a high increase was recorded for ‘consumer durables’ (+15.1%), while production of ‘energy’ saw a decrease of 0.7%.

‘Manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+21.8%), ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+15.7%) and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+15.1%) were responsible most for the high growth of total sales in industry. The sales dropped most in ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-7.7%) and ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-7.6%).

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 13.5% at constant prices (+15.4% at current prices) and their percentage in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 50.1%. The highest constant price growth was recorded for ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+27.3%), and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+27.3%). Decreases occurred in ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-25.8%), ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-20.1%) and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-3.0%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 11.9% at constant prices (+13.2% at current prices) and their percentage in total sales stood at 53.3%. Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 14.7% at constant prices (+16.3% at current prices) and accounted for 72.8% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry fell by 1.9% (by 21.4 thousand persons) y-o-y. The employment fell in most CZ-NACE activities, but most in ‘manufacture of textile and textile products’, ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’, and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’. It increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’.
Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 15 664, rising by 9.0% y-o-y. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 113.3, rising by 4.8% y-o-y. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was by 10.7% up and unit wage costs down by 1.5% y-o-y.

The volume of new orders signed in February 2004 by industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE industries reached CZK 104.9 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 66.9 billion. The y-on-y index of new orders was 118.8% of which that of new non-domestic orders stood at 120.8%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were sugned in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’– their y-o-y indices were 128.7% and 130.0%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of office machinery and computers’ (index 84.7%) and ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products’ (index 92.7%).
