Industrial production up by 9.7% in 2006

In December 2006, seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.5% month-on-month. The year-on-year index of industrial production reached 103.0% or 106.9% (working days adjusted). Sales from industrial activity at constant prices (of the year 2000) rose by 4.9% or 8.6% (working days adjusted). Industrial new orders increased by 9.2% year-on-year.

Seasonally adjusted industrial production in December 2006 was down by 0.5% month-on-month. The trend grew by 0.5% (Table 5).

The year-on-year index of industrial production reached 103.0% (or 106.9% working days adjusted, WDA; December 2006 had by two working days fewer than December 2005). The growth of industrial production (Table 6) was most affected by ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+8.9%, contribution to growth of industry in total 1.3 percentage points), ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+7.1%, contribution 1.3 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+18.2%, contribution 1.2 p.p.). Decreases were recorded for ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (-6.5%, contribution -0.8 p.p.), ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (-8.6%, contribution -0.4 p.p.) and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-3.2%, contribution -0.3 p.p.).
As to the main industrial groupings, production increases were observed for ‘consumer durables’ (+24.3%), ‘capital goods’ (+8.9%) and ‘intermediate goods’ (+0.6%). Production of ‘energy’ and ‘consumer non-durables’ decreased (-3.3% and -2.7%, respectively).
Sales from industrial activity at constant prices (of the year 2000) rose by 4.9% (+5.9% at current prices) or 8.6% WDA, year-on-year. The increase of sales from industrial activity was most contributed to by ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+14.1%, contribution to growth of industry in total 2.2 percentage points), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+18.2%, contribution 1.6 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of transport equipment’ (+7.0%, contribution 1.3 p.p.). Sales from industrial activity decreased in ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (-5.3%, contribution -0.6 p.p.), ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (-8.6%, contribution -0.4 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products; publishing and printing’ (-7.6%, contribution -0.3 p.p.).
Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased by 9.6% at constant prices (+9.7% at current prices), and their proportion in total sales of industrial enterprises was 45.7% (current prices).
Sales from industrial activity of foreign-controlled enterprises were up by 13.1% at constant prices (+14.0% at current prices), and their proportion in total sales stood at 56.3% (current prices). Direct export sales of industrial foreign-controlled enterprises increased by 14.0% at constant prices (+14.0% at current prices) and made up 73.9% of total sales of these enterprises (current prices).
The average number of employees in the industry went up by 0.3% in December 2006 (+3.0 thousand persons) year-on-year. Increases were registered in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+7.5%), ‘mining and quarrying except energy producing materials’ (+7.1%) and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+5.3%). Employment decreased most in ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ (-9.2%), ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (-9.1%) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-6.2%).
The average monthly nominal wage in the industry rose by 5.0% year-on-year and amounted to CZK 20 699. The average hourly wage increased by 9.4% and stood at CZK 176.4. Labour productivity in the industry (sales per employee) rose by 4.6% and hourly labour productivity by 9.0%. Unit wage costs grew by 0.4%.
Industrial new orders in selected CZ-NACE activities concluded in December 2006 reached the value of CZK 135.0 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic industrial new orders made up CZK 86.2 billion. The industrial new orders index (y-o-y) in total stood at 109.2%. The y-o-y non-domestic industrial new orders index increased by 13.9%. Non-domestic industrial new orders grew most in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ (+32.4%, contribution to growth of industry in total 9.5 percentage points), ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products‘ (+48.2%, contribution 3.4 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of office machinery and computers‘ (+45.7%, contribution 2.0 p.p.). Non-domestic industrial new orders dropped in ‘manufacture of fabricated metal products, except of machinery and equipment‘ (-16.3%, contribution -1.5 p.p.), ‘manufacture of radio, television and communication equipment and apparatus’ (-6.5%, contribution -0.5 p.p.) and ‘manufacture of pulp, paper and paper products’ (-15.0%, contribution -0.4 p.p.).

The average number of employees in the industry grew by 1.0% in 2006 (+11.2 thousand persons) year-on-year. The average monthly nominal wage in the industry increased by 6.0% year-on-year and amounted to CZK 19 400. Industrial new orders concluded in 2006 reached the value of CZK 1 720.1 billion (current prices). The industrial new orders index (y-o-y) in total stood at 118.8%.
