Publication Date: 12. 10. 2004

Industrial production was 1.8% down month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).
The year-on-year industrial production index reached 108.7% or 106.5% (working days adjusted, WDA; there was one more working day in August 2004 compared to August 2003). Sales in industry at constant prices (year 2000) were higher by 9.9% or 7.6% (WDA).
The highest increases in the industrial production were observed in the following CZ-NACE activities:
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (basic iron, steel and ferro-alloys, iron/steel equipment for scaffolding, shuttering)
- ‘manufacturing n.e.c.’ (office furniture of metal, toys of plastics)
- ‘manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products’ (sheet glass; prefabricated structural components of buildings, of cement)
Decreases in the industrial production were recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (handbags of leather, sports footwear)
Industrial production grew in all the main industrial groupings, rising most in the production of ‘capital goods’ (+12.4%) and ‘consumer durables’ (+8.9%).
The high growth of ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+33.9%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+21.3%) and ‘manufacture of wood and wood products’ (+16.9%) contributed to the increase of total sales in industry.
Direct export sales by industrial enterprises rose by 11.5% at constant prices (+14.0% at current prices), and their share in total sales by industrial enterprises stood at 44.5% (current prices). The highest constant price increases were recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+39.0%), ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (+32.0%) and ‘manufacture of food products; beverages and tobacco’ (+23.9%). Decreases in direct export sales occurred in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-26.9%) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-15.3%).
Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 12.3% at constant prices (+15.2% at current prices), and their share in total sales stood at 51.0% (current prices). Direct export sales by these enterprises increased by 10.9% at constant prices (+12.0% at current prices) and accounted for 70.3% of their total sales.
The average number of employees in the industry dropped by 0.4% (-4.4 thousand persons) y-o-y. The employment fell in ‘mining and quarrying’ and ‘electricity, gas and water supply’. In ‘manufacturing’ the falling employment came to an end for the first time after 34 months, its development in the individual branches of manufacturing being differentiated.
The average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 16 863, rising by 8.6% y-o-y. Unit wage costs were 1.5% down y-o-y. The average hourly wage stood at CZK 132.10 and increased by 4.3% y-o-y. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 10.3% up, productivity per hour grew by 6.1%.
New orders in industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE activities reached CZK 107.4 billion (current prices), of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 68.3 billion. The y-o-y index of new orders in total was 129.7%, of which the one of new non-domestic orders made up 134.5%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of office machinery and computers – their y-o-y indices were 116.4% and 171.3%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of wearing apparel, dressing and dyeing of fur’ (index 95.6%) and ‘manufacture of other transport equipment’ (index 44.1%).
