Industrial production was 0.1% down month-on-month (seasonally adjusted).

Year-on-year industrial production index reached 110.1%. Sales in industry at constant prices (year 2000) were higher by 8.4%.

The following CZ-NACE activities were main contributors to the rise in the industrial production:
- ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (iron, steel and ferro-alloys; iron/steel equipment for scaffolding, shuttering, propping)
- ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (electric conductors used for telecommunications, colour TV tubes)
- ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres’ (herbicides, heterocyclic compounds)

Decreases in the industrial production were mainly recorded for:
- ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ (coal or rock cutters; knitting machines).
- ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’ (leather, sports footwear with uppers of rubber or plastic)
- ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (steam and hot water supply, drinking water)

Of the main industrial groupings the highest was recorded for ‘intermediate goods’ (+15.2%). Production of ‘energy’ decreased by 0.5%.

‘Manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+20.5%), ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ (+15.6%) and ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+14.2%) were responsible for the high growth of total sales in industry.

Direct export sales of industrial enterprises rose by 9.8% at constant prices (+13.1% at current prices) and their share in total sales of industrial enterprises stood at 47.5% (current prices). The highest constant price growth was recorded for ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’ (+24.3%), ‘manufacture of chemicals, chemical products and man-made fibres‘ (+15.7%) and ‘manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products’ (+15.4%), while decreases occurred in ‘electricity, gas and water supply’ (-34.6%), ‘manufacture of coke, refined petroleum products’ (-16.2%) and ‘mining and quarrying of energy producing materials’ (-6.5%).

Industrial foreign-controlled enterprises raised their sales by 11.4% at constant prices (+14.0% at current prices) and their share in total sales stood at 53.3% (current prices). Direct export sales of these enterprises increased by 12.8% at constant prices (+16.0% at current prices) and accounted for 73.0% of their total sales.

The average number of employees in the industry fell by 1.3% (15.1 thousand persons) y-o-y. The employment fell in most CZ-NACE activities, especially in ‘manufacture of textiles and textile products’ and ‘manufacture of leather and leather products’; on the other hand it increased in ‘manufacture of rubber and plastic products’ and ‘manufacture of electrical and optical equipment’.

Average monthly nominal wage amounted to CZK 16 903, rising by 6.9% y-o-y. Average hourly wage stood at CZK 115.4 and increased by 5.5% y-o-y. Labour productivity (sales per employee) was 9.8% up and unit wage costs were 2.6% down y-o-y.

New orders in industrial enterprises in selected CZ-NACE industries reached CZK 114.4 billion (current prices) in April 2004 of which non-domestic orders accounted for CZK 72.3 billion. The y-o-y index of new orders in total was 122.9% of which new non-domestic orders made up 129.5%. The highest volumes of new non-domestic orders were signed in ‘manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers’ and ‘manufacture of machinery and equipment’ – their y-o-y indices were 117.4% and 115.3%, respectively. The volume of new non-domestic orders decreased in ‘manufacture of wearing apparel; dressing and dyeing of fur’ and ‘manufacture of textiles’ (index 85.3% and 98.4%, respectively).
