In Q1 2009, 8 721 dwellings were started (-8.9%); 9 314 dwellings were completed (+2.7%), in comparison with Q1 2008.
The planning and building control authorities granted 24 972 building permits (-5.2% compared with Q1 2008). Approximate value of permitted constructions was CZK 87.7 billion (-3.5% compared with Q1 2008).
Total value of new domestic construction orders was CZK 35.2 billion (-33.9% in comparison with Q1 2008).

Housing construction (annual changes)
In Q1 2009, 8 721 dwellings were started (-8,9%). The largest number (4 207, yet -9.7%) was recorded for dwellings started in family houses. Dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings fell by 30.7%. A more than double increase in comparison with Q1 2008 was observed for dwellings in non-residential buildings. Also dwellings started in extensions went up (+7.5%).
Average floor area per dwelling started in new construction was 128.9 m 2 and approximate value CZK 20.8 thousand per m 2.

9 314 dwellings were completed (+2.7%). The largest number (4 334, yet -3.5%) was recorded for dwellings completed in family houses. Double increases in comparison with Q1 2008 were observed for dwellings completed in residential and nursing care homes and in non-residential buildings but these dwelling make up only 5% of the total.
In Q1 2009 modernisation of 4 878 dwellings was completed (-5.1%).

Building permits (annual changes)
In Q1 2009 the number of building permits was down by 5.2%, the planning and building control authorities granted 24 972 building permits; 14 318 permits for new construction (-4.1%) and 10 654 permits for renewals and enhancements (-6.5%). Building permits granted dropped in all types of constructions, only other constructions remained at the Q1 2008 level. The largest decreases were registered for environmental constructions and residential buildings.
The approximate value of constructions permitted in Q1 2009 was CZK 87.7 billion (-3.5%). New construction saw a 3.3% decrease to CZK 57.8 billion. Renewals and enhancements should produce constructions worth CZK 29.9 billion (-3.8%). Approximate value of constructions permitted fell nearly in all types of constructions: in non-residential buildings (-18.9%), other construction (-5.5%) and residential buildings (-3.9%).
Seven building permits were granted for constructions with approximate value exceeding CZK 1 billion. They are predominantly transport infrastructures and industrial buildings and warehouses.

The planning and building control authorities granted permits for buildings with a total floor area of 1 704.4 thousand m 2 (-21.9%). Floor area of residential and non-residential buildings fell by 6.9% and 34.9% respectively.
Construction orders (annual changes)
In Q1 2009 construction enterprises booked 6 108 new domestic construction orders (-6.6%). Total value of theses orders made up CZK 35.2 billion (-33.9%); building construction orders CZK 16.2 billion (-40.5%) and civil engineering orders CZK 19.0 billion (-27.1%). The decline in the volume was partly affected by the unusually high comparative basis of Q1 2008 when the volume of new civil engineering orders grew by 137.9%. Average value per new construction order in Q1 2009 was CZK 5.8 million (-29.3%).

At the end of Q1 2009 construction enterprises with 50 or more employees registered 10.6 thousand contracted orders. These orders represented a stock of work to be done totalling CZK 215.4 billion. Domestic construction work made up CZK 204.4 billion of the total volume (+3.5%). From the total value of domestic construction orders at the end of Q1 2009, public orders accounted for CZK 150.5 billion and private orders for CZK 53.9 billion. The relation between private and public orders is affected by not including in the survey of large construction enterprises which have a markedly higher share of public orders. Orders worth CZK 11.0 billion were recorded for non-domestic construction work.
