Already since 2016, 20 October has been celebrated as the European Statistics Day, and you can enjoy the celebrations, too! The day serves as a reminder of the importance of reliable and objective data as well as the value of statistical literacy. To mark the occassion, the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) has prepared e.g. a statistical quiz and an exhibition of popular infographics.

A charity brunch is taking place today at the headquarters of the Czech Statistical Office. During the event, employees share homemade refreshments and at the same time raise funds among themselves for a charitable project. This time, Centrum Seňorina is the beneficiary of the proceeds; it provides day-care, residential, and home-based respite care services, focusing on clients with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Employees from the CZSO’s regional offices also participate in the event remotely. Last year, statisticians supported this way “Ambulance of Fulfilled Dreams” (Sanitka splněných snů in Czech), an organisation that fulfills wishes of seriously ill and dying people.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to view an exhibition of popular statistical infographics in the Czech Statistical Office’s building in Prague-Skalka until mid-December. Infographics are very popular with the public, rank among the most popular posts on the CZSO’s social media channels, and also receive positive evaluations from experts.

The CZSO has also prepared a popular on-line statistical quiz (Czech only) for anyone interested. It consists of 10 questions of varying difficulty levels covering different domains of statistics, with only one correct answer to be selected from several options provided.

For Thursday 22 October, the CZSO has prepared a webinar DataStat in a nutshell: How to work efficiently with statistical data of the CZSO (Czech only) where it will present the new data application and demonstrate its practical uses.

This year, activities also include the launch of the 9th international statistical poster competition (Czech only), which has a global reach. The competition is intended for a wide range of pupils and students, from the first stage of basic schools up to Bachelor programmes of universities. Its aim is to promote statistical literacy. By creating a statistical poster, pupils and students gain practical experience in collecting statistical data, exploring methods and possibilities for data processing, and presenting research results.

“What is also important for the Czech Statistical Office besides objectiveness and data quality is comprehensibility of data not only for experts but also for the wider public. Our activities are also aimed at promoting statistical literacy,” Marek Rojíček, President of the Czech Statistical Office, reminds.

Not only on the European Statistics Day, the CZSO is active on social media platforms X, LinkedIn and Instagram, and also runs its own YouTube channel. Data users can also make use of the mobile application of the CZSO or the Statistical Geoportal, which presents statistical data through interactive maps. The regular popularisation magazine Statistika&My (Czech only; the title translates as Statistics&Us) also deserves attention.

The European Statistics Day was established by the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) in 2016 and is celebrated annually on 20 October, except in years when the World Statistics Day falls on that date, which occurs every five years. The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness among European citizens of the importance and role of official statistics in society and to foster dialogue with the general public and other stakeholders.
