Profits/Loses of Health Insurance Companies
Commentary | Contents |
The number of active units operating in the area of health insurance was the same in the fourth quarter of 2003 as in the corresponding quarter of 2002 - there were a total of nine health insurance companies operating in the CR. Accrual-based insurance premiums (excluding insurance premiums paid by the state, including contractual insurance premiums) are a key part of the yields of health insurance companies. In the fourth quarter of 2003 they stood at 31.1 billion CZK and were 3.6 % up on the corresponding period of 2002.
Accrual-based insurance premiums written amounted to CZK 113.6 billion in the first to fourth quarter of 2003, rising by 3.7% on the corresponding period of the previous year. However, these measured premiums written do not show actual revenues of health insurance companies, as these are lower by the premiums unpaid. The actual revenues of health insurance companies (i.e., collected premiums including premiums paid for the insured for whom the state is the insurance premium payer) totalled 143.8 billion CZK over the first to fourth quarters of 2003. This translates into an increase of 6.6% on the year 2002 when the revenues amounted to CZK 134.8 billion (source: the Ministry of Health of the CR, from the results of the first to twelfth redistribution of premiums to general health insurance in the years 2003 and 2002). Incomes of health insurance companies for the whole years 2003 and 2002 are comparable with regard to the fact that the second half of 2003 saw a CZK 2.7 billion repayment of recoverable financial assistance that was provided to the general health insurance scheme from the state budget in the first half of 2003 within the intention of Article 12(2) of Act No. 5892/1992 Coll.
Total costs (including contractual health insurance) spent by health insurance companies on health care over in the first to fourth quarter of 2003 accounted for 94.1 %, their volume rising by 5.3 % year-on-year.
In the fourth quarter of 2003, there were a total of 7 131 (f/t equivalent) persons employed in the health insurance companies – a rise of 1.7 % year-on-year (7 010 persons). The average monthly wage (calculated from wages excl. other personnel expenses and from the above numbers of employed persons) was 26 555 CZK, growing by 7.3 % year-on-year.
In the fourth quarter of 2003, the health insurance companies acquired intangible and tangible (incl. land) fixed assets worth 211.6 million CZK and 151 million CZK, respectively.
The balance sum (the sum of assets or liabilities) of the health insurance companies amounted to 49.7 billion CZK at the end of the fourth quarter of 2003, increasing by 3.4 billion CZK year-on-year. The acquisition value of intangible and tangible fixed assets (depreciated) – net in the assets of the health insurance companies decreased by 19.1 million CZK.
