Travelling

Explanatory notes

Contents

Data on travelling are measured once a year in households included in the sample survey of family budgets statistics. The households for family budgets statistics are now chosen by judgement quota sampling (social groups of households, net money income per person, number of children non- provided for, number and sex of members in the household). Individual members of the household aged 15 or more are asked about longer trips they took in a reference year for the purpose of holiday or spending leisure time outside their place of residence. Data obtained from the sample survey are then grossed up to the whole population aged 15 or more.

Trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays is considered a longer trip. An overnight stay is a stay at a collective accommodation establishment (hotel, boarding house, campsite, holiday village, lodging house for tourists, recreational establishment belonging to a company or trade unions) or at a private accommodation establishment, either paid or unpaid (own weekend house, at a friend's place, sleeping in bag outdoors). Nights spent on sleeping trains or on ships during the whole trip taken were included in the number of overnight stays. Excluded out of these stays, however, were all nights spent on means of transport (train, bus) for the purpose of carrying participants in the trip from/to their places of stay. The total number of the trips made excludes business trips, stays at hospitals, stays at health resorts for medical purposes prescribed by the doctor in the framework of complex spa treatment, etc. Health resort stays for which holiday is needed (the so-called subsidised stays or stays fully paid by the patient) are included in the number of stays.

Intensity of trips (in %) indicates the share of persons with at least one holiday or leisure trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays in the total number of persons. Intensity of trips (in %) in the Czech Republic (abroad) indicates the share of persons with at least one holiday or leisure trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays in the Czech Republic (abroad) in the total number of persons. Intensity of trips (in %) of males (females) indicates the share of males population (females population) with the above listed trip in the total number of males (females).

Number of household members includes all members who resided in the dwelling concerned, excluding persons absent during the year for more than 6 months (mostly temporary members of the armed forces or persons in corrective establishments).

Destination - trips, which combine stays abroad and domestic stays, are classified to respective groups (domestic stays, stays abroad) by the prevailing length of stay. Where one trip includes a domestic stay and a stay abroad of the same length, the trip is considered a trip abroad. For round trips, the foreign country or CR's region with the longest total stay is given. Where the lengths of stay in foreign countries (in more regions) are the same, the more distant country (or region) is included.

Month of the trip - the month the trip was taken is reported. If a trip covered two successive months, the month of the longer portion of the trip is given. If the trip was split evenly between two months, the first month is reported.

Mode of transport - included is a means of transport which covered the longest distance (as a sum) in the trip. Where different means of transport were used for outward and return trips, the means of transport with a higher tariff of fare is counted in (e.g., plane is counted in if a bus and plane were used for outward and returns trips, respectively).

Accommodation establishment - the type of accommodation establishment used is given. Where several types of accommodation establishments were used during one trip, the type of accommodation establishment with the longest total stay is included. Spending nights under the tent outside campsites or sleeping in bag in the open is classified to 'other accommodation'.
Hotel is an accommodation establishment with a minimum of 10 rooms for guests and varied range of rendered services, depending on its class (number of stars).
Boarding house is a an accommodation establishment with a rather low number of rooms for guests. It provides rather a limited range of services of lower level, but the accommodation services it provides are comparable to those provided by a hotel of corresponding category.
Campsite is an accommodation establishment for temporary stay of guests in their own equipment or, as the case might be, in the operator's facilities.
Holiday dwellings are collective facilities for temporary stay of guests only in the operator's facilities (cottages, log cabins, bungalows).
Hostel for tourists is a rather simple accommodation establishment with a rather large number of beds in accommodation rooms.
Other collective accommodation establishments include, e.g., recreational facilities of companies, spas, training centres, young people's homes, halls of residence, lodging houses managed by companies, which allocate some bed capacity for tourism.
Private rental accommodation provides a limited number of places for accommodation in rented rooms, dwellings, cottage or on a family farm.
Other accommodation – accommodation in the means of transport etc.

Use of services of travel agency - the trip was included in trips with services of travel agency no matter whether the services were used fully or partially.

Destination choice - decisive way of choosing the destination of trip is included.

Length of trip - refers to the number of calendar days, including days spent on means of travel, for outward and return trip.

Main purpose of trip - main reason for taking the trip or visiting the destination of trip.

Average expenditure on trip in CZK - total average expenditure on the trip, which include payments for transport, board and lodging, travelling insurance, purchases of tourist guide-books and maps, purchases of souvenirs and presents, admission fees for sport and cultural events, etc. Hence, the expenditure includes not only payments made during the trip, but also amounts paid for the preparation and implementation of the trip.

Short-term holiday or leisure trips (of 1 – 3 overnight stays) – include also weekend trips.

Expenditure in CZK abroad – include total expenditure in CZK of households during their trips of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays, short-term trips and same-day trips.

Notes to the tables

Tables n. 1-2 (pages 13,14) contain data on the number of persons aged 15 or more, who made no a holiday or leisure trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays.
Tables n. 3 – 13 (pages 15 – 25) contain the total number of persons aged 15 or more, who made at least one holiday or leisure trip in the Czech Republic.
Tables n. 8, 9 and 10 (pages 20 – 22) include data on the total number of persons (males, females) with at least one trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays in the Czech Republic, broken down by number of trips made, is the sum of persons with trips in CR only and the number of persons with trips in the CR and abroad. Tables n. 11, 12 and 13 (pages 23 – 25) include data on the total number of persons with at least one trip of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays abroad, broken down by number of trips made, is the sum of persons with trips abroad only and the number of persons with trips in the CR and abroad.
Table n. 14 – 35 (pages 26 – 47) contain holiday and leisure trips of 4 or more consecutive overnight stays. The individual characteristics are allocated to the trips according data obtained on 3 trips considered the most important by the travellers who also described the trips in detail. Each of the trips corresponds to 1 trip made by 1 person (person-trip). The indication of a travel agency as a way to choose the destination of trip does not imply that trips in which services of a travel agency were used are involved.
Tables n. 53 – 57 (pages 65 – 69) contain figures concerning the number of short-term holiday or leisure trips (of 1 – 3 overnight stays).

The symbol of dot (.) in place of a figure indicates that the figure is not available or cannot be relied on.
The symbol of horizontal small cross (x) shows that the figure is not applicable.
The symbol of dash (-) shows that the phenomenon did not occur.
The figures and percentage shares in individual tables were rounded only after relevant calculations had been made, so that the sums may not always be the same; where percentage shares are used, their sums may not always amount to 100.
